This paper is focusing on 3D Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) based modelling of protrusions as defects or imperfections in the XLPE high voltage cable. This study is aiming to examine the impact protrusions have on the initiation of partial discharges. Spherical and ellipsoidal protrusions with different sizes at the conductor screen of the high voltage cable is an essential content of this paper. In addition, a spherical gas-filled void is placed inside and outside the protrusions, and a water tree produced from protrusions is under consideration. The partial discharge influence taking place at the protrusions and the stress enhancement factor is determined for all the variations mentioned to quantify the rise in the inception of partial discharges due to the protrusions.

Partial discharge (PD) detection is an important means in the condition-based maintenance of high voltage apparatus including crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) power cables. In this contribution, we introduce the recent work in Shanghai municipal electric power company on the condition-based maintenance of XLPE power cables. As to how to carry out the PD detection in different circumstances, three schemes are laid out in brief. Particularly, a novel idea of partial discharge joint detection method, which is based on multiple sensors, or the high frequency current transformer (HFCT) coupling technique, ultra high frequency (UHF) and acoustics emission (AE) partial discharge detection technique, is proposed. Use more than one kind of coupling techniques, the reliability of onsite PD detection and diagnosis can be improved significantly.

The electrical tree propagation experiments were performed under high voltages with a frequency of 50Hz and amplitudes ranging from 12kV to 21kV at room temperature by utilizing an actual XLPE cable as the test sample, where the concentration of electrical field was simulated by a metal needle tip. The chaotic theory was introduced to analyze the PD magnitude series during the propagation process of electrical tree. Experimental results show that deterministic chaos exists in the propagation of electrical tree in XLPE cables, and the largest Lyapunov exponent and correlation of the strange attractors increase with the decrease of electrical tree fractal dimension. The results may provide a new approach for online diagnosis of electrical tree morphology.
