Traditional roles of air forces in combat involve the subjugation of air space and the maintaining of superiority / domination in the skies in order to create favourable conditions to conduct successful land and naval operations. They are, thus, a component supporting other forces in joint military operations. Nowadays, air forces sometimes take the role of the dominant force (a component supported by other forces) and then the joint operations of armed forces are conducted in a way (as called in the article) of dominance from the air. This allows, especially in the so-called asymmetric conflicts, to obtain the military and political goals of the war without land or naval invasion. This is a new phenomenon in the Art of War, which the author of the article tries to identify, describe and systematise. To make waging a war through dominance from the air possible, airforces must have absolute freedom to use the air space in the whole area of a conflict and in the whole territory of an opponent. The current terminology related to dominance (superiority / domination) in the air and the theory of war in the air does not provide (describe) such a situation. In this article, the views in this respect, which were in force in NATO and the Warsaw Pact and are still in force in the US Armed Forces, NATO and the Russian Federation, are critically evaluated and a new terminology taxonomy for dominance in the air is suggested.

Sukces BOL podczas konfliktów zbrojnych spowodował, iż zwrócono szczególną uwagę na lotnictwo bezzałogowe. Wielu taktyków i naukowców zaczęło rozważać użycie BOL nie tylko w misjach rozpoznawczych, ale także w uderzeniowych. Ocenia się, że bezzałogowe aparaty latające ze względu na posiadane właściwości, takie jak: mała skuteczna powierzchnia odbicia energii elektromagnetycznej, niski poziom promieniowania podczerwonego i hałasu, zdolność do skrytego penetrowania strefy taktycznej i inne, mają większe możliwości przetrwania i wykonania zadań.

Number of tactics' experts and scientists started considerations on UAV's deployment not only in reconnaissance missions but in strike missions as well. It's estimated that UAV's - due to the factors like: small effective reflection surface, low level of infrared radiation and low noise, capability to perform hidden penetration and the others, have greater durability and capability to perform successful combat tasks.

This article deals with new military art phenomena. The combat canons binding so far assumed that reaching political war goals was accomplished as a result of breaking the enemy’s armed forces and seizing its territory due to land or sea invasion. The condition of victory was to gain and keep the advantage or domination in the air. The military art nowadays is enriched by another possibility to carry out military operations, which the author calls the air domination or domination from the air. This is the way to use forces, air force in particular, that become dominant, in a way „seize” the enemy from the air and lead to reach political and military aims, not meeting the condition to seize its area. Accomplishing this form of war, however, requires an absolute freedom to use air force. Therefore the author criticises both the viewpoints binding in the former Warsaw Pact and the ones launched by NATO concerning advantage and domination in the air. He suggests new scheme of states in the air that is determined by air domination and results from new phenomena in military art.
