In recent decades the discussion on how to recover historical centres has been crucial in the evolution of debate and experiences of intervention over Italian towns and territory. Starting from a traditional approach consisting in protection and restoration of single historical architectural buildings, the subject of intervention was gradually expanded to include the preservation of the original context of the building, the pre-existing city, and finally the overall goal of recovering historical, environmental and natural values.

Artykuł prezentuje koncepcję podejścia do zagadnienia ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego i architektonicznego we Włoszech w drugiej połowie XX wieku. Autor w czytelny sposób przedstawił poszczególne etapy powstawania idei konserwatorskich począwszy od doświadczeń wczesnych lat 40. XX wieku, a skończywszy na zagadnieniu Karty Weneckiej z roku 1964. Odniósł się również do krytycznej analizy działań w tej materii, jakie miały miejsce we Włoszech w latach 80.-90. XX wieku.
