Cultural goods exist both in material time-space continuum and in immaterial social space. A notion of cultural heritage appears and takes a definite form in the latter. This is not synonymous with the notion of cultural goods and constitutes the effect of conscious approval and acceptance of responsibility. The notion of heritage is a linear notion suspended in time-space continuum. Responsibility for heritage refers both to the past and the future. In relation to the past, the immaterial layer of cultural goods - their unfalsified history and connected set of meanings - should be scientifically recognized and popularized in the society. Their acceptance as heritage depends on the degree of social perception and understanding. This conscious act entails responsibility towards the future: towards future generations of .heirs of the culture.. This responsibility consists in technical operations on cultural goods (called conservation or restoration) aimed at maximum prolongation of their lasting in unfalsified spatial form. These operations performed with future in mind belong to the present moving in time. Motivation force to protect them for the future depends in every generation on the degree of conscious being associated with the history of human culture materialized in cultural goods. Social education with the aim of preserving the heritage thus becomes the basic task of cultural policy. This means popularization of the knowledge about the heritage. Progress in the registration techniques of forms and space provides ever new, unimaginable in the past possibilities of preserving cultural goods and, at the same time, bringing them closer to individuals and societies. In Poland, these possibilities are used in far insufficient degree. In the area of heritage preservation a significant participation of disciplines dealing with spatial documentation is necessary. The term .conservation by means of documentation. initially understood as technical registration of the form of a monument, which was impossible to preserve in its physical form, has been recently broadened. .Documentation. becomes both an important instrument of .prophylactic conservation. and the basis for a social message about the monument passed by media in virtual space. We have a good tradition of .measured inventory of monuments. in Poland from the times when it was done by architects by means of triangles measured by tape. A great challenge of our time is modern . inventory. of national cultural heritage - of its spatial registration for the science and for social consciousness today and tomorrow.
