Prolonged exposure to UV radiation, and ever-increasing life expectancy, mean that an increasing proportion of the population suffers from clouding of the intraocular lens. Nowadays, the performance of intraocular implantation procedures is commonplace. Unfortunately, with the increasing number of operations, the number of postoperative complications is also increasing. One way to avoid complications may be to use an intraocular implant that has been immersed in a solution containing silver nanoparticles. As part of the study, four selected intraocular implants – that are available on the ophthalmic market – were tested. In order to investigate the effect of silver particles on the optical properties of the implants, tests were carried out using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Two series of implants were tested: before and after immersion in a silver solution. The implants were immersed for a period of 7 days. It was found that the presence of silver particles does not have a negative impact on the translucency of the implants.

Studies on polymer materials used in ophthalmological surgery as intraocular implants are presented in this paper. The material under investigation were brand new lenses provided by Alcon. The first lens, model SA60AT, was the basis structure, whereas the other one, model SN60AT, was a structure with an added modification in the form of a blue light chromophore. Results obtained with the use of the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, as well as UV-vis-NIR methods, showed that the structure modified by the chromophore becomes more packed, while the results obtained by means of the UV-vis-NIR methods showed that the modification restricts the blue light transmission.

In this research the factors used to evaluate the light transmission through two types of acrylic hydrophobic intraocular lenses, one that contained yellow chromophore that blocks blue light transmission and the other which did not contain that filter, were defined according to various light condition, e.g., daylight and at night. The potential influence of light transmission trough intraocular lenses with or without yellow chromophore on functional vision in everyday environmental conditions was analysed.

In presented work internal structures of intraocular lenses were analyzed in terms of defectiveness degree. Studies were conducted by means of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy method PALS. The aim of the work was determination of basic parameters describing annihilation centers in research materials, such as positron lifetime in bulk material, mean positron lifetime in the internal structure, positron trapping rate by trapping centers as well as free volumes dimensions. In obtained results differences in free volumes and positron traps concentrations between hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials were noted. Furthermore, comparison of materials with and without blue light chromophores revealed differences in positron trapping rate by multivacancy-like free spaces. Achieved results were referenced for mechanical properties of the studied materials.

The aim of research was analysis of spectral transmittance of optical radiation through of acrylic hydrophilic and hydrophobic IOLs explanted due to deterioration of visual acuity in the course of advanced glistening phenomenon. The mean ultraviolet transmission (from 200 to 380 nm) as well as luminous transmittance (from 380 to 780 nm) were analyzed for explanted and non used acrylic IOLs.
