Prediction of coking dynamics for wet coal charge

A one-dimensional transient mathematical model describing thermal and flow phenomena during coal coking in an oven chamber was studied in the paper. It also accounts for heat conduction in the ceramic oven wall when assuming a constant temperature at the heating channel side. The model was solved numerically using partly implicit methods for gas flow and heat transfer problems. The histories of temperature, gas evolution and internal pressure were presented and analysed. The theoretical predictions of temperature change in the centre plane of the coke oven were compared with industrialscale measurements. Both, the experimental data and obtained numerical results show that moisture content determines the coking process dynamics, lagging the temperature increase above the water steam evaporation temperature and in consequence the total coking time. The phenomenon of internal pressure generation in the context of overlapping effects of simultaneously occurring coal transitions – devolatilisation and coal permeability decrease under plastic stage – was also discussed.

Dokonano przeglądu metod pomiaru ciśnienia rozprężania węgli koksowych i koksowniczych mieszanek węglowych. Wskazano na ograniczoną przydatność metod laboratoryjnych dla wiarygodnej oceny tego paramertu.Alternatywą bezpośredniego pomiaru ciśnienia rozprężania może być pośrednie jego oszacowanie na podstawie ciśnienia gazu wewnątrz koksowanego wsadu. Stosunek ciśnienia rozprężania do ciśnienia gazu wewnątrz wsadu mieści się w granicach od 0,5 do 1 ,0. Dla literowania zagrożeń wynikających dla ścian komór koksowniczych ze strony koksowanych węgli o wysokim ciśnieniu rozprężania można stosować pomiar ciśnienia gazu wewnątrz wsadu, prowadzony za pomocą pakietu sond umieszczonych w osi wsadu.

Presented is a review of methods for the measurement of coking pressure. A limited relevance and applicability of available laboratory methods for coking pressure determination is discussed. An alternative approach for the evaluation of coking pressure includes the determination of internal gas pressure directly in the coke oven charge. The ratio of the coking pressure to the internal gas pressure in the charge is typically found in the range of 0.5 -^ 1.0. For monitoring potential threats to coke oven walls due to the utilization of coals with extremely high coking pressure, measurements of internal gas pressure with a set of probes placed in the center of the charge could be applied.
