The chapter discusses the performance aspects of intelligent agents in Complex Event Processing (CEP) systems. The contemporary solution for implementing CEP systems is based on available software components (Siddhi) and modern implementation techniques (Kubernetes). However, Siddhi lacks the implementation of modern deep learning algorithms. Hence, the concept of intelligent agent is introduced. A case study with a set of intelligent agents designed to handle real-world events related to environmental data monitoring is presented. The results of the case study discussion indicate a reasonable scale for tuning the Event Processing Element (EPA) topology with correct responses and the required output performance level. These results have important implications for the practical implementation of the EPA structure, i.e., the use of GPUs in CEP systems. Finally, the results of performance analysis of different implementations of intelligent agents are presented and discussed.

Today the amount of information available in the world is so large that it exceeds significantly the perceptual capacity of a man. The progress of science and increased access to the media, in particular to the Internet, allows an increasing number of people to create and publish their own content. Refer to the information that can be found in our area of interest is limited to read a very small part of the works on the topic. What’s more the overlooked information can be very useful, but selective viewing of the contents and limited time resources prevent the users to meet their information needs. An attempt to solve this problem are multi-agent systems, using intelligent methods of retrieval and processing of information.

This article describes approach to the decision support intelligent systems development based on ontologies as part of such systems knowledge bases. Such systems are classified in terms of their functioning based on ontologies. Mathematical functioning of decision support intelligent systems is developed, which is based on ontologies. The term adaptive ontology is introduced to denote that. The adaptive ontology model is defined as classic model development by adding weights of importance of concepts and relations, stored in ontology.

This paper describes the author's concept of conducting simulation-based research on applications of intelligent agents in smart grid management systems. Section 1 introduces an intuition on applying AI in this emerging field. Section 2 describes a motivation for and some aspects of implementing an intelligent agent system in combination with a power distribution system simulator. Section 3 splits the project into phases, which accomplish specific tasks.

The complexity and dynamics in groupage traffic require flexible, efficient, and adaptive planning and control processes. The general problem of allocating orders to vehicles can be mapped into the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). However, in practical applications additional requirements complicate the dispatching processes and require a proactive and reactive system behavior. To enable automated dispatching processes, this article presents a multiagent system where the decision making is shifted to autonomous, interacting, intelligent agents. Beside the communication protocols and the agent architecture, the focus is on the individual decision making of the agents which meets the specific requirements in groupage traffic. To evaluate the approach we apply multiagent-based simulation and model several scenarios of real world infrastructures with orders provided by our industrial partner. Moreover, a case study is conducted which covers the autonomous groupage traffic in the current processes of our industrial parter. The results reveal that agent-based dispatching meets the sophisticated requirements of groupage traffic. Furthermore, the decision making supports the combination of pickup and delivery tours efficiently while satisfying logistic request priorities, time windows, and capacity constraints.

The agent technology has recently become one of the most vibrant and fastest growing areas in information technology. On of the most promising characteristics of agent is its intelligence. Intelligent agent is the agent that percepts its environment, collects all information about its environment that it needs, processes these information and then generate proper actions according to these information. This paper discusses trends and differences between two main types of intelligence that can be applied to agent: accumulative intelligence and dynamic intelligence. Accumulative intelligence is discussed with its two perspectives: moment perspective and historical perspective. Auto-vehicle driver is also discussed as an application example of accumulative intelligence. Also, MOSAIC, Mimesis, and MINDY models are reviewed as the pioneering works of dynamic intelligence.
