The number of large diameter HDD crossings has grown in recent years. Especially for steel pipelines a discussion about the bending radius to be used is still on going. In a workshop during the 2006 DCA congress the discussion about the HDD radii was revived. A number of projects in this category encountered difficulties during execution. In this paper a 48" steel gas pipeline installed by the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technique is discussed.

Zalety i skuteczność technologii HDD i mikrotunelowania, stosowanych w korzystnych warunkach gruntowych, są znane i wykorzystywane od ponad 30 lat. Jednak obie metody mają swoje ograniczenia spowodowane warunkami gruntowymi oraz kosztami użytkowania. W celu znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytania i trudności pojawiające w trakcie realizacji tymi technologiami długich odcinków oraz dużych średnic wierceniach, zwłaszcza w trudnym gruncie lub w środowisku szczególnie chronionym, Herrenknecht AG opracował nową metodę bezwykopowego układania rurociągów, która łączy elementy zarówno HDD jak i mikrotunelowania. Nową technologię nazwano Easy Pipe.

Easy Pipe is Herrenknecht's Combined Trenchless Technology Installation Process For Long Distance, Large Diameter Pipelines In Difficult Ground. Whilst the advantages and effectiveness of Microtunnelling and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) in suitable ground conditions have been known and widely used for over 30 years, both systems do, individually, have their limitations on either operation in some ground conditions and in relative cost terms. In an attempt to answer some of the questions and difficulties raised when applying these trenchless techniques to longer distance, larger diameter bores in some of the more arduous ground types, particularly in more environmentally sensitive areas, Herrenknecht AG has developed a new method of trenchless installation that combines elements of both the microtunnelling and HDD processes.
