The paper presents the evolution of energy-efficient facades from the end of XIX through the 20th century until contemporary times. Crucial concepts were portrayed: mur neutralisant of Corbusier, the idea of the use the greenhouse effect get on the south facade, multi-layered glass facades propositions together with the attempts to include the systems of the blind, heating systems and the air-conditioning into them and finally innovative solutions based on achievements of the materials engineering. At the end it was proved that in spite of the evolution of the technology, pioneering attempts to build energy-efficient facades had turned out to be enough fruitful and inspiring, that are still being adapted also within contemporary solutions.
