The aim of the present work is to compare the properties of self-hardening moulding sands based on inorganic binders based on sodium silicate of different modules, geopolymer binders and phosphate binders and to prove they can be used in the ablation casting process. Ablation casting is a process in which, directly after pouring the liquid alloy, the mould is sprayed with water until it is completely eroded and a finished, cooled casting is obtained. The use of proecological water-dilutable binder makes it possible to recover the sand matrix after drying the suspension that remains after the process. Moulding sands were prepared on the basis of four inorganic binders available on the market. For each of the moulding sands the bending strength was tested after 1, 2, 4 and 24 h of hardening. Then, the masses with optimum bending strength were selected and subjected to gas emissivity tests. A thermal analysis of moulding sands selected for testing was also carried out in order to determine the loss of mass during annealing. The susceptibility of moulds to erosion under the influence of ablative medium was also assessed by measuring the time of mould erosion. Tests showed the possibility of using self-hardening moulding sands based on inorganic binders for the ablation casting process of aluminium-silicon alloys.
This study shows the results of the investigation of the strength performance, and residual strength of a single component inorganic binder system Cast Clean S27®. The study was conducted using three different foundry sand sources in South Africa. Sample A is an alluvial coastal sample, sample B is an alluvial riverbed sample and Sample C is a blasted sample from a consolidated quartzite rock. The binder was also cured using three different curing mechanisms. The aim of the investigation was to determine the variation of strength performance and residual strength between the different South African sand sources based upon the physical and chemical properties of the sand sources. The moulding sand was prepared using three possible curing mechanisms which are carbon dioxide curing, ester curing and heat curing. The strength measurements were determined by bending strength. Sample A and sample C sand had good strength development. Sample B sand had inferior strength development and excellent high temperature residual strength. The study showed that the single component inorganic binders have good strength development and low residual strength. The silica sand properties have major contributing factors on both strength development and residual strength. The degree of influence of silica sand properties on strength performance and residual strength is dependent on the time of curing and method of curing.
A method for the chemical modification of silicate binder (hydrated sodium silicate) affecting the distribution of its nanostructure elements was disclosed. The effect of silicate binder modification on the resulting technological properties of moulding sands, determined under standard conditions and at elevated temperatures in the range from 100°C to 900°C, was discussed. Modification of this type is done on inorganic binders in order to reduce their unfavourable functional properties. It is particularly important when moulding sands with the silicate binder are used for casting of low-melting alloys. Therefore special attention was paid to the impact that modification of inorganic binders may have on the knocking out properties of sands prepared with these binders, when they are used in the process of casting non-ferrous alloys.

The development of economy and industry introducing new technologies and materials often means the increased threat of occurrence of factors harmful to humans and environment. Workers employed in foundries as mould pourers are the group of high professional risk. Foundry moulding sands when poured with liquid metal are a source of the emission of harmful, toxic and carcinogenic (benzene, PAHs) compounds. The paper presents the results of studies on the concentration of chemical compounds emitted in the process of casting aluminium alloy and brass using moulding sands with the new inorganic binders. The specific values of the exposure indices were compared with the limit values. This enabled an assessment of the impact of moulding sands on work environment. The obtained results were compared with the values of contaminants emitted when pouring foundry moulds made from furan sands and bentonite sands with an addition of coal dust.
The article presents the results of investigations, which make a fragment of the broad-scale studies carried out as a part of the project POIG.01.01.02-00-015/09 “Advanced materials and technologies”. One of the objectives of the introduction of new inorganic binders is to provide a good knocking out properties of moulding sands, while maintaining an appropriate level of strength properties. Therefore, a logical continuation of the previous studies were carried out the tests knocking out properties of moulding sands with new inorganic binders, including making moulds, pouring them by the chosen of non-ferrous metal alloys, knoking-out, and determining the knocking out work. The results of the study were related to the research results obtained by applying the moulding sand performed by existing technology.
One of the purposes of the application of chemically modified inorganic binders is to improve knocking out properties and the related reclamability with previously used in foundry inorganic binder (water glass), which allowing the use of ecological binders for casting nonferrous metals. Good knocking out properties of the sands is directly related to the waste sands reclamability, which is a necessary condition of effective waste management. Reclamation of moulding and core sands is a fundamental and effective way to manage waste on site at the foundry, in accordance with the Environmental Guidelines. Therefore, studies of reclamation of waste moulding and core sands with new types of inorganic binders (developed within the framework of the project) were carried out. These studies allowed to determine the degree of recovery of useful, material, what the reclaimed sand is, and the degree of its use in the production process. The article presents these results of investigation. They are a part of broader research programme executed under the project POIG.01.01.02-00-015/09 'Advanced materials and technologies'.

The article presents the results of investigations, which make a fragment of the broad-scale studies carried out as a part of the statutory activity on optimising the foundry sand technology using new, modified, inorganic binders. The results of investigations regarding the effect of lustrous carbon carriers on the technological properties of foundry sands with inorganic binders were presented in a concise manner. The selected additives were introduced to moulding sands prepared with the new, modified, inorganic binders bonded by the chemical reaction or by blowing with gaseous CO2. Attention was focussed on the effect of selected additives promoting the formation of lustrous carbon on the knocking out properties of moulds and cores prepared from sands with the new types of inorganic binders. The quality of the test castings was also evaluated along with the tendency to the formation of lustrous carbon at the metal - mould interface, basing on the results of microscopic examinations and analysis of the chemical composition using an X-ray microanalyser.

The article gives the results obtained in a fragment of the studies, carried out under a statutory activity, on optimising of the foundry sand technology with new modified inorganic binders, chemically bonded and CO2 hardened. The presented results of the investigations of the self-setting sands with new inorganic binders show the character of changes in basic technological parameters in function of the time and a variable content of the binding agents, allowing also for the important - from the foundry's point of view - effect of ambient conditions, i.e. temperature and humidity, on the kinetics of the sand binding. In the case of CO2 hardened sands, special attention was paid to the phenomenon of friability of these sands, which is considered an indication of the mould and core surface quality, and as such has an important effect on the quality of final products when fabricated under the industrial conditions.
