Content available remote Biomedical ontologies—A review
EN
Current societies undergo a transformation into information societies. ‘‘Digitialization’’ is progressing in every aspect of life, including health care. Handling the increasing flow of biomedical data presents a serious challenge to researchers and clinicians. Ontologies – controlled vocabularies that allow describing the meaning of data (its semantics) in a human and machine readable way are used more and more often to aid processing of information in biomedical research and in healthcare systems. The aim of this work is to bring closer the field of ontologies to the medical society. The theoretical basics are presented and exemplified with a range of ontologies used for describing diseases, medications, proteins, experimental procedures, etc. Currently the multitude of ontologies is an obstacle in further data integration. Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and OBO Foundry (Open Biomedical Ontologies) are projects started to counteract this problem. UMLS aims at merging existing vocabularies, while OBO initiative is based on coordinated, harmonic development of new ontologies and reformation of existing ones. The pros and cons of both philosophies are presented. The final section of the article features examples of ontology applications.

Content available remote The First Step Toward Processor for Rough Set Methods
EN
In this paper we propose a combination of capabilities of the FPGA based device and PC computer for data processing using rough set methods. Presented architecture has been tested on the exemplary data sets. Obtained results confirm the significant acceleration of the computation time using hardware supporting rough set operations in comparison to software implementation.

In the paper, we focus on ant-based clustering time series data represented by means of the so-called delta episode information systems. A clustering process is made on the basis of delta representation of time series, i.e., we are interested in characters of changes between two consecutive data points in time series instead of original data points. Most algorithms use similarity measures to compare time series. In the paper, we propose to use a measure based on temporal rough set flow graphs. This measure has a probabilistic character and it is considered in terms of the Decision Theoretic Rough Set (DTRS) model. To perform ant-based clustering, the algorithm based on the versions proposed by J. Deneubourg, E. Lumer and B. Faieta as well as J. Handl et al. is used.

This paper presents the need for use of information tools based on BIM, in the context of existing and predicted challenges and opportunities for the construction industry, mainly associated with increasing amount of information that have to be processed in order to improve the efficiency and meet requirements of sustainable development. On this basis and according to literature, the fundamental principles of the BIM concept, which shall be fulfilled to address its entire potential of benefits for the construction industry, are proposed. In general, the role of a building model is to store and share information. Therefore, possible applications of the particular model depends on the scope and the quality of contained data. Assuming that appropriate information sets are included, the use of building model based on the BIM concept can be beneficial during all lifecycle stages of the building it represents, for example during the design process, the construction stage, the operation and maintenance stage etc. The paper introduces schema representing general rules of creating a building model by filling it with data and its application afterwards. It also presents some practical examples of BIM applications on a different stages of a building lifecycle, explains basic notions connected with the BIM concept, and briefly explains general rules of storing information according to IFC - open and independent data schema specification, the effect of collaboration among industry and science, widely accepted as a data exchange format in the construction industry.
