Semantic Knowledge Management System to Support Software Engineers: Implementation and Static Evaluation through Interviews at Ericsson

Background: In large-scale corporations in the software engineering context information overload problems occur as stakeholders continuously produce useful information on process life-cycle issues, matters related to specific products under development, etc. Information overload makes finding relevant information (e.g., how did the company apply the requirements process for product X?) challenging, which is in the primary focus of this paper. Contribution: In this study the authors aimed at evaluating the ease of implementing a semantic knowledge management system at Ericsson, including the essential components of such systems (such as text processing, ontologies, semantic annotation and semantic search). Thereafter, feedback on the usefulness of the system was collected from practitioners. Method: A single case study was conducted at a development site of Ericsson AB in Sweden. Results: It was found that semantic knowledge management systems are challenging to implement, this refers in particular to the implementation and integration of ontologies. Specific ontologies for structuring and filtering are essential, such as domain ontologies and ontologies distinct to the organization. Conclusion: To be readily adopted and transferable to practice, desired ontologies need to be implemented and integrated into semantic knowledge management frameworks with ease, given that the desired ontologies are dependent on organizations and domains.

W artykule omówiona została eksploracyjna analiza danych tekstowych ze szczególnym naciskiem na zastosowania analizy text miningowej. We współczesnym świecie istnieje wiele różnych branż biznesowych w których pracownicy stykają się z nadmiarem napływających informacji. Rozwój społeczeństwa informacyjnego oraz technologii informatycznych pociągnął za sobą w sposób naturalny powstanie zautomatyzowanych systemów wspomagających wyszukiwanie i porządkowanie informacji. Techniki text miningu znajdują coraz większe zastosowanie, zaś szeroki przegląd zastosowań wraz ze wskazaniem praktycznym możliwości zastosowania analizy text miningowej został dogłębnie omówiony w artykule.

The article discussed the text mining with particular emphasis on the use of text mining analysis. In the modern world there are many different business industries where workers are in contact with an excess of incoming information. The development of the information society and information technology entailed a natural rise of automated systems to support search and organize information. Text mining techniques are increasingly applied, and a broad overview of applications, together with an indication of the practical possibilities of the use of text mining analysis has been thoroughly discussed in the article.

Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce funkcjonowania młodego pokolenia we współczesnym społeczeństwie, cechującym się nadprodukcją informacji. Przedstawia opis i analizę zjawiska zalewu informacyjnego. Autorka prezentuje stanowisko, że znaczącym problemem w dobie widocznych przemian jest przyrost i szybkie tempo informacji, jej kontrola i dystrybucja. Jednostka postawiona została wobec wyboru wśród różnorodnych i obfitych informacji zarówno w edukacji szkolnej, pracy zawodowej, jak i życiu prywatnym. Na tle powyższych przemian należy analizować funkcjonowanie we współczesnym, dynamicznie zmieniającym się świecie młodego pokolenia – zwanego pokoleniem sieci, generacją Y, czy cyfrowymi tubylcami. Tekst przedstawia wybrane problemy z jakimi przychodzi się zmierzyć młodemu pokoleniu w obliczu nadmiaru informacji. W dobie coraz powszechniejszego informacyjnego boomu, erozji jakościowej informacji – jeśli nie może być ona właściwie magazynowana, selekcjonowana, wydobywana, przekazywana, rozpowszechniana i zrozumiana we właściwy sposób – staje się praktycznie bezużyteczna. Informacja zyskuje miano użytecznej w sytuacji jej transformacji w wiedzę i mądrość. Taki proces wymaga kompetencji, opartych na refleksyjności wymaganych do selekcji, odbioru, interpretacji i weryfikacji danych. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie z jednej strony problemów funkcjonowania młodzieży z pokolenia sieci w obliczu informacyjnego zalewu, z drugiej zaś próba przedstawienia edukacyjnych propozycji rozwijania sprawności radzenia sobie z przerostem informacji.

The article is devoted to young generation's functioning in the contemporary world, which is characterized by the overload of information. The paper presents a description and analysis of information overload phenomenon. The author claims that the increase and fast pace of information, control and distribution of information, constitute a significant problem in the present time of visible transformations. An individual needs to choose among different and abundance of information, not only in education and career, but also in a private life. Functioning of young generation, also known as the Internet generation, generation Y, or digital natives, in the contemporary, dynamically changeable world, should be analyzed against a background of all the transformations. The article presents chosen problems young generation has to deal with, in the face of information excess. In the era of more and more common information boom, qualitative information erosion, if the information cannot be selected, extracted, conveyed, widespread and understood in a proper way, it becomes practically useless. The information becomes useful, when it is transformed into knowledge and wisdom. Such a process requires competences based on reflexivity, in order to select, receive, interpret and verify the data. The aim of the article on the one hand, is to show problems the Internet generation experiences in the face of information overload, on the other hand, to show educational solutions, which may be helpful in developing information excess coping skills.

This paper presents the main problems encountered by a member of information society. In order to fulfill the information needs every citizen needs to be provided with information of appropriate quality. One of the most important conditions of a proper functioning in information society is also information and social order. The article contains enumeration of main psychological information barriers that interfere achieving information goals, namely: information overload, lack of information literacy and memory problems.

Nowadays we are continuously bombarded with a lot of information, and because of it we have serious problems with accessing the relevant information, that is, we suffer from the information overload problems. Recommender systems have been applied successfully to avoid the information overload in different domains, but the number of electronic resources daily generated keeps growing and the problem rises again. Therefore, we find a persistent problem of information overload. In this paper we propose an improved recommender system to avoid the persistent information overload found in a University Digital Library. The idea is to include a memory to remember selected resources but not recommended to the user, and in such a way, the system could incorporate them in future recommendations to complete the set of filtered resources, for example, if there are a few resources to be recommended or if the user wishes output obtained by combination of resources selected in different recommendation rounds.
