Methylotropic microorganisms and thier mutants can be effectively applied in the biological treatment of industrial wasterwater containing formaldehyde and methanol. In this article biochemical, enzymatic and regulatory mechanisms of single-carbonic metabolism in eukaryotic microorganisms are briefly reviewed. The biodegradation capabilities of exogenous formaldehyde by yeast revealing methyltrophic pathway reactions are discussed. It has been proved that mutants of Hansenula polymorpha methyltrophic yeast species get integrated with the activated sludge and can utilize a very high concentration of formaldehyde contained in industrial wastes.
