The article discusses the issue of recognition of engineering geological conditions for the implementation of tunnel investments. It was noted that despite the spread of tunnel construction in Poland, there is still no unambiguous, precise and widely used definition of a tunnel. It was pointed out that as of 2018, a number of industry guidelines (general, road, rail) for the investigation and recognition of the subsoil are in force in Poland. These guidelines are extensive and not always mutually consistent. The article discusses important but marginalized activities in the engineering geological documentation process for tunnel construction. Among other things, reference is made to the analysis of archival materials, geological mapping, locating boreholes, taking parameters or making hydrogeological observations. The examples presented in the article prove that it is impossible to predict all possible potential geohazards in the guidelines. An instrumental approach to provisions in the guidelines can result in the omission of many important natural issues. The refore, when documenting, great emphasis should be placed on the knowledge, experience and independence of the documenting engineering geologist.
