Content available remote Modeling of Fatigue Crack Growth in Shell Components with Circular Holes
EN
Comparisons of numerical and analytical analyses of crack growth in shell components with a row of circular holes are presented in the paper. The analyses revealed inability of typical analytical models to accurately predict fatigue crack growth life of such components since the direct use of crack opening stresses from finite element calculations results in very conservative life assessments. Modification of analytical calculations has been proposed, in order to account for the effect of the material surrounding the holes on magnitude of calculated stress intensity factors. Application of a stress correction factor for analytical models resulted in a significant improvement of fatigue life assessments compared to numerical crack growth analyses. It was also shown that single edge crack should be analyzed using a double edge crack model with the same width, w, as the single edge crack model. Eventually, consideration was given to replacement of the actual crack opening stress distribution obtained from FE analyses with a simplified one. Analyses performed for the considered component with a wide range of hole diameters confirmed that such simplification results in a negligible decrease of predicted lives, and therefore can be used in engineering calculations.
