Enantiomerically pure (R)-1-(1-phenylethyl)imidazoles 4a,b can be prepared conveniently from alfa-(hydroxyimino)ketones 1, (R)-1-phenylethylamine and form aldehyde, fol lowed by deoxygenation with Raney-Ni. Similarly, the reaction with (R,R)-trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine yields enantiomerically pure (R,R)-trans-1,1'-cyclohexane-1,2-diyl)imidazoles 4c,d. Alkylation of these imidazole derivatives with alkylbromides leads to the corresponding 3-alkylimidazolium bromides 6 and 8, respectively, which on treatment with sodium tetrafluoroborate are transformed into the correspond ing tetrafluoroborates 7 and 9. Whereas some of the imidazolium salts 7 show properties of chiral ionic liquids, the bis-imidazolium tetrafluoroborates 9 are high-melting crystalline materials.

Anew series of task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) have been prepared. They are based on the 1-alkylthiomethyl-3-methylimidazolium and hyl-3-butoxymethylimidazolium cations with anions such as BF4 , NTf2 ,CFCO 3 2 and (CN)2N-. Their physical properties (density, viscosity, solubility and thermal stability) have been estimated. All TSILs can be decomposed by oxidation using KMnO4 in an aqueous solution. The alkylthiomethyl group distinguishes these liquids from other TSILs by the fact that the former can be utilizing ozonation in an aqueous solution as a means of destruction. Amethod for the decomposition of ionic liquid (ILs) by photocatalysis has been demonstrated. The participation of ILs in light absorption by TiO2 was shown. The IL molar mass influence on photocatalytic decomposition was proven. The samples with a lower molarmass had higher stability under UVlight in the presence of TiO2. The degree of decomposition depends upon the cation and anion. The easiest to degrade proved to be ILs with a long alkyl substituent. Ammonium ILs (choline derivatives) with hydroxyl group proved to bemore stable than with acetyl group. Themost readily decomposable salts are phosphonium ionic liquids.
