Natural hydrogen occurs as admixtures in Polish gas fields, reaching max. 10.4% vol. As a free gas, gas dissolved in waters/brines, gas from mud degassing or desorbed gas, it has been found in numerous wells in Cambrian, Devonian, Carboniferous, Rotliegend, Zechstein Limestone, Main Dolomite, and Triassic rocks, as well as in the Paleozoic-Mesozoic basement of the Carpathian units, Miocene of the Carpathian Foredeep and in the Outer Carpathians. In a similar form, hydrogen has also been found in copper and salt mines. So far, the content and distribution of the natural hydrogen in individual stratigraphic units, as well as hydrogen resources and poten¬tial for exploration, have not been determined. The origin of the accumulations is also unknown, although several possibilities of hydrogen generation should be considered on the territory of Poland: migration from deeper parts of the crust or Earth ’s mantle/core along deep faults, serpentinization of mafic/ultramafic rocks, radiolysis of water, hydrolysis in iron-rich formations, Variscan magmatism and volcanism, metamorphism of coal beds, and biogenic decomposition of organic matter. These issues will be the subject of the Polish Geological Survey investigations planned beginning from 2025. The article describes the research plan for natural hydrogen exploration in Poland. This work is therefore a review of ideas and questions, which will hopefully find an answer or will be at least considered in later publications of various authors.
