Tales from the Silk Road – a snapshot of trade with China in the Polish press during the second half of the 19th century

This paper presents trade between China and Europe along the historical Silk Road, based on the materials from the Warsaw press published in the second half of the 19th century. The 19th century was a period of intense military actions led by the European empires in the Far East. The defeat of the Qing Dynasty during the Opium Wars marked the so-called cutting of the “Chinese cake” and the gradual fall of the empire. The events of this period caused an increased interest in the subject of the Middle Kingdom among Europeans and also in the Polish press.

Droga Królewska to jeden z najważniejszych w starożytności i w czasach średniowiecza traktów na terenie Bliskiego Wschodu. Rozpoczynająca się w Egipcie, a kończąca na terenie dzisiejszej Syrii droga była szlakiem handlowym i miejscem wymiany idei i wynalazków. Dzięki niej rozwinęło się wiele znanych ośrodków, a w epoce średniowiecza funkcjonował ruch pielgrzymkowy. Do dziś nie brak tu śladów dawnej świetności, często zapominanych i niedocenianych. Istnieje więc silna potrzeba skupienia uwagi badaczy i konserwatorów na tym ważnym dla historii ludzkości szlaku.

King’s Highway became one of the most important routes during ancient and medieval times, in the Middle East. Starting in Egypt and ending in modern Syria, the route was a trading artery and a place of ideas and inventions exchange. Thanks to this route a number of well-known centers functioned in ancient times as well as pilgrimage traditions in the Middle Ages. Today there is almost no traces of its former glory. It seems to be frequently forgotten and underrated. There is therefore a strong need to focus interest of scholars and conserva- tors on that, important in the history of mankind, route.
