Artykuł przedstawia historię powstania oraz działalność Koła Mechaników i Elektrotechników Studentów Polaków Politechniki Gdańskiej. Koło było jednym z sześciu polskich kół naukowych utworzonych w okresie międzywojennym i skupiało polskich studentów wydziałów budowy maszyn i elektrotechniki Politechniki Gdańskiej (Technische Hochschule der Freien Stadt Danzig). Głównym celem Koła była wszechstronna pomoc w studiach. Koło organizowało wzajemną pomoc w nauce, praktyki zawodowe, studiowanie polskiej literatury naukowej oraz odczyty, wycieczki naukowe do ośrodków przemysłowych. Prowadziło bibliotekę oraz utworzyło pierwszą na politechnice Komisję Skryptową. Działalność Koła odegrała znaczącą rolę w kształceniu polskich inżynierów elektrotechników. Wielu absolwentów stanowiło elitę inżynierską lub naukową, należało do uznanych ekspertów w zakresie projektowania i budowy urządzeń elektrycznych oraz autorów książek i artykułów z tej dziedziny. Liczni zostali profesorami polskich Uczelni.

The article presents the history of the establishment and activity of the Scientific Circle of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers of Polish students of Gdańsk University of Technology. The Scientific Circle was one of six Polish research Circles created as part of the organization "Bratnia Pomoc" ZSPPG in the interwar period and gathered Polish students of the faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology. The main aim of the Circle was to provide comprehensive assistance in studies. The club organized mutual aid in learning, apprenticeships, studying Polish scientific literature as well as lectures and scientific trips to Polish and foreign industrial centers. The Circle ran its own professional library, also created the first Script Commission at Gdańsk University of Technology. The activity of the Society played a significant role in education of Polish electrical engineers. Many graduates constituted the elite in engineering or research, became recognized experts in the design and construction of electrical devices, as well as authors of books and articles in this field.

Politechnika Gdańska rozpoczęła swoją działalność 6 października 1904 r., jako Königliche Techniche Hochschule zu Danzig. Zadaniem uczelni było szerzenie wiedzy technicznej na terenie Prus Zachodnich oraz Pomorza. Od początku działalności kadrę uczelni tworzyło wielu wybitnych uczonych. Na sześciu wydziałach studia rozpoczęło blisko 200 studentów. W 1921 r. została oddana w jurysdykcję Senatu Wolnego Miasta Gdańska. 5 kwietnia 1945 r. grupa operacyjna Ministerstwa Oświaty rozpoczęła odbudowę oraz uruchomienie uczelni. 24 maja 1945 r. Dekretem Rady Ministrów politechnika została przekształcona w polską państwową szkołę akademicką. W pierwszym roku po wojnie studia podjęło 1647 studentów. Kadrę dydaktyczną stanowili pracownicy naukowi z Politechniki Lwowskiej i Warszawskiej oraz Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, w tym wielu wybitnych profesorów oraz liczni polscy absolwenci przedwojennej politechniki.

Gdansk University of Technology - the oldest technical university in Pomerania region - its foundation is inscribed in a centuries–old tradition of scientific life in Gdansk. On 6th October 1904, the university began its activity as Königliche Technische Hochschule zu Danzig. The main task of the university was to spread technical knowledge in the area of West Prussia and Pomerania. Since the very beginning nearly 200 students began to study at six faculties taught by university staff consisted of many distinguished scientists. In 1921 the technical university was subjected to the jurisdiction of the Senate of the Free City of Danzig. In the mid – twenties Polish students amounted to more than 30% of all students. Among them were many graduates who became later professors and famous scientists at Polish HEI’s after the Second World War. On 24th May 1945 the technical university was legally transformed into a Polish state academic university by Decree of the Council of Ministers. But already since 5th April, the Ministry of Education operational group started reconstructions of the buildings and launched the university activity. In the first year after the Second World War 1647 students began to study at six university faculties. University academic staff consisted mainly of scientists from the prominent universities and technical universities of Lviv, Vilnius and Warsaw. Among them were many outstanding professors and numerous Polish graduates of Gdansk University of Technology who completed their studies and received a degree before the Second World War.

Taking control over education by a newly originating Polish administration on the territories occupied by German and Austrian forces placed the officials of the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment in a difficult position resulting from the problem of stabilizing the staff lecturing in the two founded during war capital academies: the Warsaw University and the Warsaw Institute of Technology. One had to find such form of solving the problem, which would have let reconcile administration's anxiety to control and achieve supremacy over academies cultivating the tradition of academic liberties. A newly established special board, which gathered representatives of academic circle and the invited by the minister persons actively engaged in educational work, having the social respect, seemeed to be a solution giving a strong probability of satisfaction of both of sides. A key matter was a choice of the likely candidates for the members of the board. The Ministry chose the mature scholars that were descended from classes of society of a stabile, but not of a very high position (gentry, intelligentsia, officials). The board, in spite of its conservative origin, on the occasion of choosing the candidates for the Warsaw departments, in most of the cases pronounced for the younger colleagues both as far as age and scientific practice are concerned.

W związku z jubileuszem pięćdziesięciolecia Wydziału Elektroniki i Technik Informacyjnych Politechniki Warszawskiej podjęto próbę syntetycznego przedstawienia historii wydziału utworzonego w 1951 roku pod nazwą Wydziału Łączności, a w latach 1966-1994 noszącego nazwę Wydziału Elektroniki. Naszkicowano rozwój Wydziału w aspekcie organizacyjnym, dydaktycznym i naukowym. Pokazano zewnętrzne i wewnętrzne uwarunkowania rozwojowe Wydziału oraz podstawowe problemy, przed którymi staje on na progu drugiego pięćdziesięciolecia swego funkcjonowania.

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, an attempt has been made to synthetically present the history of the faculty established in 1951 under the name of the Faculty of Telecommunications, and known in the period 1966-1994 under the name of the Faculty of Electronics. The development of the Faculty with respect to its organisation, teaching and research activities has been outlined. Internal and external factors influencing this development have been shown, and the fundamental challenges the Faculty has to face at the very beginning of the verge of the XXIst century, have been identified.
