Obserwowane coraz szersze wykorzystanie zabytkowych kamienic dla funkcji turystycznych ma związek z coraz większym, dynamicznym rozwojem turystyki we współczesnych miastach. Zabytkowe rezydencje miejskie (pałace, kamienice) adaptowane są dla różnorodnych funkcji, służąc obecnie jako muzea i galerie, hotele i lokale gastronomiczne. W przypadku miejskich starówek często generalnym założeniem dla lokali mieszczących się w kondygnacji parteru są takie właśnie funkcje (przykładem są dzielnice staromiejskie Gdańska, Torunia, Poznania, Warszawy, Krakowa, Wrocławia, Zamościa). Są to w dużej mierze funkcje, jakie były pierwotnie w tych obiektach przewidziane i przez wiele wieków realizowane (usługi gastronomii, handlu lub rzemiosła) W przypadku funkcji nowych, nie mających związku z tradycyjnym przeznaczeniem budynku a wymagających znacznych powierzchni (muzeum, hotel) najczęściej dochodzi do adaptacji całego budynku (Muzeum Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Warszawie) lub nawet łączenia kilku sąsiadujących (Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Warszawy, Hotel "Copemicus" w Krakowie).

Historic city residences (castles, palaces, town tenement-houses) are often converted into different tourist functions, serving as museums and art galleries, hotels and restaurants. If we consider the European old cities districts, we can pinpoint ubiąuitous tourist functions there, mainly at the ground floor (which has been traditionally used in tenement-houses for merchandise or service functions).The results of our study, carried out in the Institute of Tourism and Recreation, proof that the various tourist functions in the Warsaw historie tenement-houses (mainly located at the ground level) have a truły significant value to balance necessary tourist services in the town areas which are highly attractive and popular from the visitors point of view (Old Town, Centre). We are thoroughly convinced that the present use of historie tenement-houses seems to be highly rational and fulfilling both the rising expectations of tourists and the need of sustainable, economic grow broadly welcomed by the local community members. The example of Praga District is exceptionally interesting, as showing the astonishing recovery of the town formerly impoverished area. Of course one has to realise that the certain limitations (as technical restrictions, building law regulations, conservatory authority's recommendations) have a deep influence on the conversion potential possibilities and contemporary use changes of these architectural relies.
