40 lat po wydaniu książki Janusza Bogdanowskiego Warownie i zieleń Twierdzy Kraków przypomniany jest wielki zespół zieleni, nasadzonej w ramach powstawania i rozwoju krakowskiej fortecy (1849–1916). Trwające nadal badania pozwoliły na określenie chronologii nasadzeń intencjonalnych i sukcesji, kategoryzację zieleni pod względem funkcji pierwotnych i współczesnych wartości ekologicznych, urbanistyczo-kompozycyjnych i edukacyjnych. Badania rozpoczęte w środowisku krakowskim zainicjowały podobne prace m.in. na terenie dawnych twierdz Poznań, Warszawa, Wrocław, Toruń, Przemyśl, a także w Puli w Chorwacji. Potwierdza to historyczne i współczesne znaczenie zabytkowej zieleni fortecznej.

40 years after the publication of Janusz Bogdanowski’s book Strongholds and green of the Krakow Fortress, a great complex of greenery, planted as part of the creation and development of the Krakow fortress (1849–1916), is reminded. Ongoing research has allowed the determination of the chronology of intentional planting and succession, the categorization of greenery in terms of primary functions and contemporary ecological, urbancompositional and educational values. Research started in the Krakow environment initiated similar works, including in the area of former fortresses Poznań, Warsaw, Wrocław, Toruń, Przemyśl and also in Pula, Croatia. This confirms the historical and contemporary significance of historic fortress greenery.

The landscape is a key resource of a fortified area, with camouflage greenery being an important element. An understanding of a historic fortification system in its entirety and the associated cultural and environmental heritage is the main argument calling for the necessity of having an interdisciplinary approach to the research of historic fortification greenery and the landscapes of historic fortifications. The enormous area of the sites, the techniques that went into designing them based on an analysis of the topographical landscape and the scope of the changes made to the landscape demonstrate the advanced level of military engineering that went into creating this structured greenery, the remains of which have amazingly survived to the present. The composed arrangements of fortress greenery are a valuable part of the natural environment, would guarantee that endangered species of flora and fauna are preserved in the environment. The contemporary role of fortress greenery is to serve as the foundation for consolidating or renovating areas on the outskirts of the city that were part of the former fortification landscape. This is also a guideline for the modern use of the imitative method in connection with undesirable areas in the landscape.

Krajobraz jest kluczem do rozważań nad fortyfikacją, w tym nad zielenią militarną jako jej konstytutywnym elementem. Dostrzeżenie całości komponowanego systemu, wartości zarówno kulturowych, jak przyrodniczych to główny argument przemawiający za koniecznością interdyscyplinarnych badań nad dawnymi zadrzewieniami fortecznymi i fenomenem krajobrazu warownego. Ogromna skala tych założeń, technika ich projektowania na podstawie analizy krajobrazowo-topograficznej oraz rozmiar przekształceń dowodzą wysokiego poziomu inżynierów wojskowych w tworzeniu tych zielonych struktur, zadziwiających trwałością ich śladów w krajobrazie. Zespoły zieleni fortecznej są cennym elementem systemu zieleni, gwarantem zachowania środowiska życia gatunków zagrożonych flory i fauny. Współczesna rola zieleni fortecznej to rola osnowy w procesach scalania lub rekompozycji krajobrazu terenów pofortyfikacyjnych i przedmieść. To także wytyczna do współczesnego stosowania metod mimikry w stosunku do obiektów niepożądanych w krajobrazie.
