The Kamieniec Ząbkowicki Metamorphic Belt (KMB) comprises a volcano-sedimentary succession exposed in a collision zone between domains of the European Variscides, interpreted as the Saxothuringian terrane and the Brunovistulian microplate. The studied rocks have preserved evidence of two metamorphic episodes. The first episode, M1, occurred under high-pressure and low-temperature (HP-LT, 18 kbar and 480oC) conditions, associated with burial of the KMB rocks in an east-directed subduction zone. The subsequent episode, M2, took place during the final stages of exhumation to the middle crustal level, under medium-pressure and medium-temperature conditions (MP-MT, from 6 kbar and 520oC, through 7 kbar and 555oC, to 3-4 kbar and 590oC). The meso- and microstructural record allows reconstructing three deformation stages. The D1 stage is interpreted as due to subduction of the KMB rock succession, whereas the D2 stage is considered as related to the subsequent exhumation. At that time, the PKZ underwent folding, a process that had begun under HP conditions (Mt metamorphic episode) and ended under MP conditions (M2 metamorphic episode). The final deformation stage, D3, must have corresponded to the final phases of exhumation. At that stage, granitoid veins and lenses were injected, which led to heating and rheological weakening of the KMB rock succession and gravitational collapse. This process resulted in the formation of shear zones with top-to-SW and W kinematics.
