The paper presents the application of heuristic optimization methods in identifying the parameters of a model for bainite transformation time in ADI (Austempered Ductile Iron). Two algorithms were selected for parameter optimization – Particle Swarm Optimization and Evolutionary Optimization Algorithm. The assumption of the optimization process was to obtain the smallest normalized mean square error (objective function) between the time calculated on the basis of the identified parameters and the time derived from the experiment. As part of the research, an analysis was also made in terms of the effectiveness of selected methods, and the best optimization strategies for the problem to be solved were selected on their basis.

This paper presents study about Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) controller applied to speed control of DC motor. DMC controller parameters (prediction horizon, control horizon and damping rate of reference) are obtained through optimization methods employing heuristic, deterministic and hybrid strategies. The use of advanced control technique combined with using of optimization methods aims to achieve highly efficient control, reducing the transient state period and variations in steady state. These methods were applied on a simulation model in order to verify which one provides better control results.

Capacitors in power systems are used to supply reactive power to minimize loss and to improve the voltage profile. The appropriate placement of capacitors is also important to ensure that system power losses and total capacitor costs are minimal. The capacitor placement problem is commonly solved using heuristic optimization techniques which are diverse and have been the subject of ongoing enhancements. This paper presents a survey of the literature from the last decade that has focused on the various heuristic optimization techniques applied to determine optimal capacitor placement and size.

Custom power devices (CPD) are used to protect conventional and sensitive loads against power quality disturbances such as voltage sag/swell and harmonic distortion in power systems. The proper placement of CPDs has an important effect on the quality of improvement and ensures that the total costs are minimal in accordance with maximum efficiency. This paper presents a survey of the literature in the last decade that have focused on the various optimization techniques applied to determine optimal placement and size of CPD.

W artykule przedstawiono przegląd literatury z ostatniej dekady z zagadnienia metod optymalizacji rozmieszczenia i rozmiaru urządzeń energoelektronicznych o regulowanej mocy (ang. Custom Power Device) pracujących jako filtry, do poprawy jakości energii w systemach energetycznych.

The paper presents a heuristic approach to the problem of analog circuit diagnosis. Different optimization techniques in the field of test point selection are discussed. Two new algorithms: SALTO and COSMO have been introduced. Both searching procedures have been implemented in a form of the expert system in PROLOG language. The proposed methodologies have been exemplified on benchmark circuits. The obtained results have been compared to the others achieved by different approaches in the field and the benefits of the proposed methodology have been emphasized. The inference engine of the heuristic algorithms has been presented and the expert system knowledge-base construction discussed.

Online scheduling (also known as dynamic scheduling) refers to a real-time coordination of operation processing while new operations are continuously arriving. Despite the attention this area received over last years, little effort has been spent on cases where multiple resources are required for an operation processed. The objective of this paper is the study of different online scheduling techniques specifically in a dynamic, stochastic job shop scheduling with multiple resources. We adopt algorithms for dispatching and optimizing schedulers to this case and provide a quantitative study of their performance under varying stochastic conditions. We also discuss the regret-based algorithm from Bent and Van Hentenryck. While this approach is superior in the case of scheduling single resource, it showed inferior performance in our experiments compared to its underlying optimizing scheduler.

The paper presents the possibility of the limit stress state approximation of the reinforced concrete wall structures by discontinuous stress fields with variable configuration. Heuristic optimization technique, simulated annealing, is applied to determine optimal configuration for approximation of load carrying capacity based on lower bound theorem of theory of plasticity. Model was tested by comparing with the results of several experimental tested beams, as well as with other numerical models.
