Conservation practice and the future of doctrinal texts

2021 marks the 90th anniversary of the adoption of the Athens Charter. This, the first international conservation charter, now forms part of the rapidly expanding collection of ‘doctrinal texts’ which undergirds modern conservation. Whatever its strengths and weaknesses, this collection provides a marker of collective identity and is crucial to the self-definition of our discipline. While they are rightly held in great affection, this paper argues that to approach this collection of texts uncritically risks producing unintended consequences, potentially including the destruction of important heritage. Precisely because of their enduring influence, it is essential that as a discipline conservation engages in knowledgeable criticism of its doctrinal texts, through an appropriate and hermeneutically literate reading. This paper first considers the nature of doctrinal texts, before using the notion of ‘doctrine’ to explore some of the parallels and differences between doctrinal texts of a religious nature and those of conservation, and so to introduce the question of hermeneutics. This then leads to a discussion of the relation between theory and practice, and the notion, from Aristotle, of phronesis or practical wisdom. The paper then concludes with consideration of some of the implications conservation of adopting this approach.

W 2021 r. przypada 90. rocznica przyjęcia Karty Ateńskiej. Ta pierwsza międzynarodowa karta konserwatorska stanowi obecnie część szybko powiększającej się kolekcji "tekstów doktrynalnych", które leżą u podstaw współczesnej konserwacji zabytków. Niezależnie od swoich mocnych i słabych stron, zbiór ten stanowi wyznacznik tożsamości zbiorowej i ma kluczowe znaczenie dla samookreślenia naszej dyscypliny. Choć słusznie darzymy je wielkim sentymentem, w niniejszym artykule dowodzimy, że bezkrytyczne podejście do tego zbioru tekstów niesie ze sobą ryzyko niezamierzonych konsekwencji, w tym potencjalnie zniszczenia ważnego dziedzictwa. Właśnie ze względu na ich nieprzemijający wpływ, istotne jest, by jako dyscyplina konserwatorska zaangażowała się w świadomą krytykę swoich tekstów doktrynalnych, poprzez odpowiednią i hermeneutyczną lekturę. W artykule rozważono najpierw naturę tekstów doktrynalnych, a następnie wykorzystano pojęcie doktryny do zbadania niektórych podobieństw i różnic między tekstami doktrynalnymi o charakterze religijnym a tekstami konserwatorskimi, wprowadzając w ten sposób kwestię hermeneutyki. Prowadzi to następnie do dyskusji na temat relacji między teorią a praktyką oraz arystotelesowskiego pojęcia phronesis, czyli mądrości praktycznej. Artykuł kończy się rozważaniami na temat niektórych implikacji konserwatorskich przyjęcia tego podejścia.

Tradycja jest uznana za centralne pojęcie Ortodoksji. Stanowi ona także uniwersalne kryterium oceny wszystkiego, co do tzw. domeny sacrum aspiruje. Dlatego też znaczenie tego kryterium dla architektury sakralnej jest aż tak istotne, a samo podjęcie badań w tym zakresie - celowe. W artykule niniejszym ukazano problem hermeneutycznych podstaw transponowania tradycji w architekturze sakralnej Kościoła wschodnioortodoksyjnego. Przedstawiono w skrócie: zarys, tezy, cele, metody i wyniki kilkuletnich studiów badawczych nad tą problematyką. Studia te stanowią podstawę do dalszych pogłębionych badań podejmujących tę problematykę w aspekcie funkcji i znaczenia form architektury w sztuce sakralnej, tych więc badań, które kładą nacisk przede wszystkim na traktowanie sztuki jako formy przekazu ściśle określonych treści sakralnych. Służyć też one mogą za punkt wyjścia w procesie projektowania architektury świątyń.

Tradition has always been accepted as a central concept of orthodoxy. It also constitutes a universal assessment criterion of everything that aspires to the so called sacrum domain. That is why the meaning of the criterion appears to be so essential for sacred architecture and all the investigations in the field so purposeful.The paper presents the problem of hermeneutic fundamentals of the transposition of tradition in the sacred architecture of the eastern-orthodox church. A short characteristics of the scope, premises, aims, methods and results after several years of research in the field. The research constitutes the basis for further and deeper investigations of the problem in the aspects of function and the importance of architectural forms in sacred arts. So the research should lay the main stress, first of all, on treating arts as a medium for specific sacred content. The research may also useful as a starting point for a design process of sacred buildings.
