Herbal plants and spices, due to their aromatic and medicinal properties, are widely used in pharmacy, cooking, cosmetology and agriculture. The increase in the number of willow plantations for energy crops has enhanced the interest of the salicylic glycosides contained in the willow bark which shows multidirectional pharmacological activity. The small-scale production of herbs and spices requires the application of agricultural machines and horticultural implements adjusted to the area cultivated. In this paper, the comprehensive characteristics of the medicinal properties of willow are presented. Newly developed machines used for the mechanisation of the establishment and cultivation of herbs and spices are also described. The machines presented are a part of the technology developed at the Rzeszow University of Technology which can also be used for the mechanisation of biomass production. In order to improve the physicochemical properties of the soil and increase the amount and quality of yield, natural organic fertilisers can be used. Therefore, the paper presents the correct method of storing manure and a device for the application of solid and liquid fertilizers to the soil as well as a device for monitoring the state of the soil-water environment.

The cultivation of herbs in Poland is one of the newest sectors of plant production despite the centuries-old tradition of using herbs across the world. Contemporary herbal processing in Poland is primarily oriented to the production of herbal medicines, as in many other European countries. The cultivation, harvesting and processing of herbs in small and medium-sized farms require machinery and devices adjusted to the scale of production. The processing of herbal plants involves drying, which is one of the most important stages of herb preservation and the most energy-consuming process occurring in agricultural production. A comprehensive review is presented covering the various methods used in agriculture to preserve herbal plants and the classification of solar-energy and hot-air drying systems. In addition the paper presents examples of the development of solutions using low-temperature herb dryers appropriate to small and medium-sized farms.

Celem przedstawionych badań była ocena przydatności dopuszczonych do stosowania w gospodarstwach ekologicznych] ziół: czosnku, tymianku i bazylii do zaprawiania nasion roślin rolniczych: pszenicy i buraka cukrowego oraz warzyw: rzodkiewki, marchwi i pietruszki. Badane gatunki roślin uprawnych odmiennie reagowały na zaprawy nasienne. W przypadku] buraka cukrowego najlepszą ochronę siewek i rozwijających się roślin uzyskano stosując zaprawę chemiczną Funaben T, natomiast marchew i pietruszka lepiej reagowały na zaprawy ziołowe. Najwyższą obsadę wykazały rośliny wyrosłe z nasion zaprawianych mieszaniną czosnku i bazylii. Natomiast sam czosnek podwyższał obsadę roślin w stosunku do kontroli jedynie w przypadku rzodkiewki. Podobnie najwyższy plon korzeni wydały rośliny wyrosłe z nasion zaprawianych mieszaniną czosnku i bazylii. Był j on odpowiednio o 117% (marchew), 35% (pietruszka) i 69% (rzodkiewka) wyższy od plonu roślin wyrosłych z nasion zaprawianych chemicznie.

The object of an experiment was to assess the usefulness of powdered plants (garlic, thyme and basil) for wheat, sugar beet, radish ,carrot and parsley seed dressing. Mentioned crops showed different reactions to seed treatments. The best protection of sugar beet seedlings and young plants was obtained due to conventional chemical seed dressing Funaben T. On the contrary carrot and parsley showed better reaction to the herbal seed dressing. The highest number of plants was obtain from seed dressed with mixed garlic and basil powder. The results were respectively by 19% (carrot), 79% (parsley) i 49% (radish) higher than for plants from untreated seeds. Slightly lower increase in plant number comparing to the control seeds was obtained from seeds dressed with powdered garlic mixed with thyme. Pure garlic powder increased only i number of radish plants. Highest root yields for carrot, parsley and radish were obtained from seeds treated with garlic cm basil. They were by 115%, 35% and 69% respectively higher than from seeds treated with chemical seed dressing Funaben T.
