Polish chemists have been engaged in the development of chemistry of porphyrins and related macrocycles. In the first part of the historical review, short biographies and achievements of the pioneers in the field are presented. In particular, the importance of studies performed by Marceli Nencki, Leon Marchlewski, and their co-workers, in the discovery of structures of pigments of life — heme of chlorophyll — is underlined. The contributions of other Polish biochemists and forensic chemists are discussed as well.

The article is focused on two current subjects of biomagnetism: (i) investigations of metallo-proteins in the living organisms, (ii) biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, ferrofluids and metallo-organic complexes. Since iron plays a crucial role in many vital metabolic processes, the description of metallo-proteins is limited to Fe-biomolecules. The concept of magnetic targeting in medical therapy and diagnosis is presented and the most typical clinical applications of functionalised magnetic nanostructures are reviewed.
