Handicraft production is usually chaotic and difficult to monitor, since its products and manufacturing processes are complex. As all the manufacturing steps rely on varied skill levels of the workers, the situation is even more stochastic. There are several common problems, such as inappropriate production method, line unbalance, excessive stock, lack of production planning and control phases, etc. They stem from the lack of suitable operation model, redundant workforce usage, and insufficient internal training activities, which lead to the waste of human resources. In this paper, a roadmap to improve the operational efficiency of handicraft manufacturing is suggested, using Lean-Six Sigma methodology and tools. A case study is conducted in a Vietnamese firm to show the validity of the approach.

Despite having diversified products, some part of Indian handicrafts is still untapped with lack of awareness about new traditions. This interventional study is first of its kind to investigate the occupational use of carving hand tool that contributes to the development of hand-arm vibration (HAV) and noise. Reductions in HAV were evaluated using low-cost foam rubber as damping intervention on the tool handle. Sound pressure levels under actual work conditions were measured. The exposure was monitored from twenty experienced wood carvers. We used system usability scale as a basis to analyse the usability of foam rubber on bare handle. The daily vibration exposure indicated reduction by around 20% when compared to conventional handle. Mean equivalent sound pressure level (Lex, 8 h) was quite high (93.17 dB (A)), exceeding the exposure limit. The intervention was effective in curtailing frequency-weighted acceleration in dominant axes, but, deficient in reducing peak values during the field testing. The damping intervention showed a positive effect on usability ratings. The other contribution of the study is to propose the insight to develop a hand tool that could prevail over HAV to a greater extent. The implementation of hearing conservation programmes and practice of personal protective equipment’s have been suggested.

In order to ensure equality of occupational health care among employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and of larger companies, amendments in the regulations of the numerous German accident insurance funds had to be made to provide for full availability of services, as requested by German and European law. According to these amendments, sectors formerly exempted due to small size and due to lack of an adequate number of qualified personnel, had to be covered by occupational health care. In order to reach this target group new strategies of care delivery had to be developed, making use of pre-existing infrastructure and networks. In Germany, district trade association (Kreishandwerkerschaften) have proved to be very effective for introducing occupational safety and health care into SMEs by either hiring external multidisciplinary services or by establishing a common service to be used by all associated crafts establishments. In a study conducted by the Federal Office for Health and Safety at Work in 1996 (Boldt, Gille, &Grahl, 1997), 7 district trade association were looked at in detail for their strategies. The results were discussed and supplemented in a 2-day workshop.
