Przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów pokrywy śnieżnej na stacji meteorologicznej w Katowicach Muchowcu oraz na terenie Międzynarodowych Targów Katowickich w Chorzowie. Na tym terenie 28 stycznia 2006 r. uległa katastrofie hala o konstrukcji stalowej. Podano wnioski wynikające z tych pomiarów, a także propozycje badawcze i normalizacyjne w zakresie obciążenia śniegiem.

The paper deals with the results of the snow measurements on roofs and on the ground made after the collapse of the Exhibition Hall of the International Katowice Fair on January 28, 2006. It has been found that positive temperature of the ground leads to the melting of lower layer of snow cover and winter maximum snow loads measured on the ground at meteorological stations are lower than resulting from sum of precipitation. Snow and ice loads on the flat roof of the exhibition hall in Chorzów were 1,5 to 1,8 times higher than ground snow load in the adjacent park. Additional coefficient in the formula for snow load on a roof is proposed called as climatic factor, in order to take into account these phenomena. The possible change of the codification of snow loads is also discussed.
