The black garden ant, Lasius niger, is known (especially in cities) for the mass mating flights of its sexuals. The literature on these flights is rich, except for one issue – their height. Such data are scarce and ambiguous. Based on the frequent finding of L. niger colonies on highly located balconies and an observation of ants from such a balcony colony killing arriving conspecific (alate and dealate) gynes, the possible height of these flights is estimated at at least 27–30 m. This result is discussed in the context of previous information.
