In the 1980’s the amount of new museum constructions started raising suddenly and the most famous pre-existing institutions began to create its external branches in distant locations. Crowning achievement of this process was a grand opening of Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao on the 18th of October 1997, which not only determined the conventional direction of urban renewal in the de-industrialized cities, but also started a new era in the history of a stardom in architecture, formally opening the age of its global range. The most representative cases of the aforementioned phenomena will be presented and discussed. Nowadays many star-architects are specialized in designing the museums, Frank Gehry and Daniel Libeskind being the most notable ones, and almost every member of this elite has at least one significant constructed object of that function in his or her portfolio. The reason of such a synergy can be found in the facts that they justify such feature as signature design, central urban locations predestine the buildings to become landmarks and their function giving a wide margin in shaping the internal spaces allows architects an artistic treatment of its form. This is a probable explanation why the museum constructions are certainly not the most financially lucrative but even though the most prestigious ones. The paper aims to trace the evolution of world famous museums in the late 20th century and the beginning of 21st century, paying special attention to the role of star architecture in the processes of transformation and to the emergence of the designers elite itself.

Architekt nie powinien projektować "przyszłej architektury". Musi tworzyć na potrzeby teraźniejszości, wybiegając myślą daleko w przód. Na włoskich uniwersytetach ciężko pracujący ludzie za pomocą wyczerpujących konstrukcji myślowych wyjaśniają racje swych poczynań, a zwłaszcza powody, dla których świat zewnętrzny musi być w błędzie. Ekonomiści, politycy i całe społeczeństwo, wszyscy próbują myśleć krótkoterminowo. Ale prawdziwe rzeczy tak nie powstają. Jeżeli uda nam się zapewnić społeczeństwu przyszłość, gdy ta przyszłość nadejdzie, jeśli nadejdzie dla nas, ta nowa architektura będzie tam na nas czekać.

Architects must not design a "future architecture". He must create for the present, thinking with a long term approach. In the Italian Universities hard-working employees of the auto-referring theories are explaining, with exhausting mental constructions, the reasons for their operating, and especially the reasons for which the external world has to be in error. Economists, politicians, and the whole society try to reason for the short term. But real things are not made for the short term. If we succeed in giving a future to the society, when we will be there in the future, if we'll be there, the new architecture will be there, waiting for us.

Pojęcie "dzieło" architektury należy zdefiniować od nowa, ponieważ jego znaczenie zostało zatarte poprzez wymienne używanie z terminem "ikona". Jest to efekt wpływu kultury masowej na architekturę, czego objawem jest również działający system "star-architects" skutkujący intronizacją dzieł "wybitnych" poprzez aklamację w oparciu o mechanizmy rynkowe i stosowanie coraz dalej idącej literalności reprezentacji, wypierającej autentyczne wartości architektoniczne.

The term "canonic work of architecture and/or architectural masterpiece" should be redefined, because its meaning has been polluted by the interchangeably used term "icon". This is the result of the influence of the mass culture upon architecture, another symptom of which is the functioning of the "star-architects" system. All this results in enthronement of so-called masterpieces by acclamation, on the basis of the market mechanisms and literalness of representation, pushing out the authentic architectural values.
