Temporal Patterns of Wetland-Associated Bird Assemblages in Altered Wetlands in Turkey

A loss of wetlands, one of the highly sensitive ecosystems, necessitates the monitoring and assessment of wildlife population trends for the continuity and sustainable management of species. The goal of our study was to evaluate temporal changes in wetland-associated bird composition by conducting monthly counts during December 2006 - November 2007 and March 2015 - February 2016 in Efteni Lake, Duzce, Turkey. This lake has been exposed to structural change including shoreline length, area and depth for the last 50 years. Wetland-associated bird richness decreased, and abundance increased during the decade, but this change was not significant except for two species with an increased population, ferruginous duck Aythya nyroca and great crested grebe Podiceps cristatus. Cluster analyses resulted in two groups: the breeding season from April to September, and the non-breeding season from October to March. The most numerous species were observed mostly during the non-breeding season. Some guilds, including diving carnivores, omnivores, shoreline omnivores and herbivores species were more prevalent during the non-breeding season. The insectivores had higher population densities during the breeding season. Thus, wetland-associated bird abundance during the non-breeding season was higher than during the breeding season, although species richness was the opposite. The planned restoration of habitats of Efteni Lake should have a positive impact on birds by creating more space available to them. Our result should help to better understand the impact of habitat changes on waterbird assemblages. Long-term monitoring of Efteni Lake will be useful for the wetland-associated avian community, and for other animal and plant communities.

Życie codzienne mieszkańców miast, miasteczek i wsi budzi niesłabnące zainteresowanie nie tylko środowisk naukowych, ale także szeroko rozumianych społeczności lokalnych. Siedemnastowieczny Zamość, jako ważne centrum handlowe i naukowe wielokulturowej i wielowyznaniowej Rzeczypospolitej stanowi także interesujący przedmiot badań w różnych aspektach związanych z życiem codziennym. Zagadnienie to podejmowało już w swoich opracowaniach wielu badaczy, jednakże ciągle jeszcze dalekie jest ono od wyczerpania. Podejmując próbę odtworzenia fragmentów barwnego życia codziennego mieszkańców Zamościa w tym okresie autor koncentruje się na wybranych aspektach, takich jak uroczystości cechowe czy udział w uroczystościach religijnych. Analizuje także codzienne swary i kłótnie, próby ich łagodzenia, drobne i poważne przestępstwa, wyroki sądowe i sposoby wymierzania kar. Ważnym elementem życia codziennego są także plotki, wskazujące na sposób rozpowszechniania się informacji kształtujących opinie społeczne. W życiu codziennym szczególne miejsce zajmuje rozrywka, towarzysząca mieszkańcom na różnych etapach aktywności zawodowej i społecznej, jako stały element zamykający wszystkie sprawy. Artykuł oparty jest na pamiętniku zamojskiego mieszczanina i profesora Akademii Zamojskiej Bazylego Rudomicza z lat 1656-1672, oraz innym materiałach źródłowych.

The everyday life of residents of the big and small towns and villages is still in the centre of the permanent interests not only of scientific circles but also of local communities understood in the broadest sense. Being an important trade and academic centre of the Polish Republic of several cultures and confessions, the 17th-century town of Zamość is also an interesting subject of researches of various aspects of everyday life. In spite of the existence of many early elaborations, the problem in question still needs to be studied. Undertaking an attempt of making a reconstruction of fragments of the baroque Zamość ’residents’ colourful everyday life, the author concentrates particularly on such aspects as ceremonies of the guilds or residents’ participation in religious ceremonies. He also analyzes daily squabbles and quarrels, attemps of their mitigations, minor and serious offenses, court judgments as well as ways of punishments. Since rumours indicating how information shaping a public opinion is spread, they seem to be an important element of everyday life too. A special place is also reserved for an entertainment; for it not only accompanies residents at different stages of their professional and social activities but also brings all of their affairs to an end. The article is based on a diary written in 1656-72 by Bazyli Rudomicz, a Zamość townsman and Professor of the Zamość Academy, and on other sources.
