Liquid-crystalline siloxanes with azo-dye group

The effects of incorporating an azo dye moiety as a nonlinear optically active chromophore with benzoyloxyphenyl-substituted mesogens to a cyclosiloxane and silsesquioxane backbones are reported. The LC cyclic oligosiloxanes were characterized by 'H NMR, FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The mesogenic properties of the oligomers w'ere studied by differential scanning calorimetry' (DSC) and polarizing microscopy (POM). The results show that all siloxanes exhibit smectic phase except for siloxane with azo-dye group only substituent, for which the LC state was not evident.
