Smart design upcycling of post-production display panels into new creative materials to support the sustainable development of a circular economy in the furniture industry. The economy is currently transforming from a linear economy to a circular economy. This is increasingly supported by policy, legislation, industry, and academia. A circular economy means more efficient management of renewable natural resources, which has implications for businesses’ bioeconomies, as expressed in the sustainable development goals of the United Nations’ 2023 Agenda. Our study contributes to solving a research gap by seeking to answer several questions: How can post-production residues be used to improve a company’s bioeconomy? Can they bring profit to a company while saving natural wood? Is upcycling using the smart design of post-production a helpful solution for material and cost savings in the bioeconomy? The outcome of our study is twofold. From a creative input perspective, we show the creative possibilities of upcycling production residues. For business models, we refine the conceptualisation of a sustainable SME circular bioeconomy through the profit gained from such a product solution. Based on our research, we present conclusions and suggestions for small and medium-sized enterprises, scientists, designers, and technologists to help the furniture industry transition from a linear economy to a sustainable circular economy. This promotes company profitability and growth and helps to save natural wood.

Management of wood production residues as wholesome products - case study. The aim of the analysis is to check the possibilities of better use of post-production wood residues, which as a result of these activities gain the same value as full-value production materials. This includes producing high-quality products from them having in mind innovation, design and ecology. The circular economy and sustainable development strategies are new concepts and objectives of the EU material strategy. There is no turning back from these actions. They will be forced by the requirements and recommendations of the EU. Therefore, it is better to get used to them and to the activities behind them. An example should be taken from the new course at the University of Cambridge - Judge Business School.

Obejmuje to wytwarzanie z nich wysokiej jakości produktów z dbałości o innowacyjność, wzornictwo i ekologię. Gospodarka o obiegu zamkniętym i strategie zrównoważonego rozwoju to nowe koncepcje i zamierzenia strategii materiałowej UE. Od tych działań nie ma odwrotu. Zostaną wymuszone wymogami i zaleceniami UE. Dlatego lepiej przyzwyczaić się do nich i do działań za nimi stojących. A przykład należy wziąć z nowego kursu na University of Cambridge – Judge Business School.

Product development is usually a response to an existing problem in a product, or it is identifying users' needs in order to ameliorate the living conditions of people or to enhance life in general. Some patients with certain ailments and geriatrics in general usually have an incontinence problem. Disposable products are available at relatively expensive price and not easily available for certain people or for financially marginalized people, and yet there is need for these products. This research was done to develop an affordable, re-usable product for adults who have an incontinence challenge. Terry cloth was used as an absorbent fabric for the future product and three water repellent fabrics were tested for water repellency and bleaching, prior to designing and evaluating the product. All three fabrics were water repellent and only one was resistant to chlorine bleach used in the development of this product. The chlorine resistant fabric was used in constructing the adult washable nappy. When the prototype was evaluated from user trials, it received approval when used with durable laundry gloves and machine washed. Generally, the design was approved for use by individuals with an incontinence problem and thus recommended for public use.
