The paper presents an analysis of a selected grade of high silicon cast iron intended for work in corrosive and abrasive conditions. The text describes its microstructure taking into account the process of crystallization, TDA analysis, EDS, XRD and the chemical composition analysis. In order to determine the phase composition, X-ray diffraction tests were carried out. The tests were executed on a Panalytical X'Pert PRO X-ray diffractometer with filtration of radiation from a lamp with copper anode and PIXcel 3D detector on the deflected beam axis. Completed tests allowed to describe the microstructure with detailed consideration of intermetallic phases present in the alloy. Results of the analysis of the examined alloy clearly show that we deal with intermetallic phases of Fe3Si, Fe5Si3 types, as well as silicon ferrite and crystals of silicon. In the examined alloy, we observed the phenomenon of segregation of carbon, which, as a result of this process, enriches the surface of silicon crystals, not creating a compound with it. Moreover, the paper demonstrates capability for crystallization of spheroidal graphite in the examined alloy despite lack of elements that contribute to balling in the charge materials.

This study discloses the characteristic features of the modified low-cycle fatigue test used for the determination of the mechanical properties of two types of cast iron, i.e. EN-GJL-250 and EN-GJS-600-3. For selected materials, metallographic studies were also conducted in the range of light microscopy and scanning microscopy.

The microstructure of spheroidal graphites in ductile cast iron (FCD450) was investigated by TEM using cross sectional TEM samples prepared by FIB method. The spheroidal graphite consisted of many small areas, and all of these areas were indexed as the graphite structure and just carbon peak was detected from there.

The object of the present paper is to determine the distribution of admixing elements, such as magnesium, manganese, silicon and sulfur, in the boundary layer of the main inlet of a ductile iron casting. The authors also intend to demonstrate the influence of elements diffusing from the casting mold, such as oxygen and silica, on the chemical composition of the boundary layer of the casting.

The work compares the effectiveness of selected methods of graphitizing inoculation applied after the spheroidization in the slender tundish ladle of 1 Mg capacity. The inoculation was carried out according to the three various options. The first one was performed simply by means of the block of inoculant inserted in the gating system of the mould, the second one started with initial inoculation by the in-stream method during the transfer of metal from the slender ladle to the pouring ladle and was completed with the secondary modification by means of the inoculant insert placed in the mould, the third one consisted in similar initial inoculation by the in-stream method during the transfer of metal from the slender ladle to the pouring ladle followed by the secondary inoculation, again by the in-stream method, applied during the pouring operation. Examination of cast iron structure allowed to find that the best results of inoculation are achieved in the case of inoculation carried out according to the Option III, though in all cases it was possible to produce cast iron of EN-GJS-400-15 grade meeting the demands of the Standard.

The nodular cast irons are characterized by high mechanical properties compared to cast iron with lamellar graphite or vermicular graphite. The ductile iron has already been the subject of many studies especially since the literature is rich on them, and sources of information are different. The fact is that the mechanical properties of nodular cast iron (FGS) depend on the number of graphite grains, their roundness, the solidification rate and nature of the matrix [3]. Many studies of nodular cast irons showed that the more spherical particles of graphite, the higher the mechanical properties are high. In gray cast irons, the graphite spheroids have anticracking and give the ductile iron ductility. Note in this connection that the higher the number of graphite grains, the higher the ductile iron has better mechanical properties. In cast iron, the nature of the matrix is depending on several parameters including the cooling rate of molten metal, the thickness, shape and dimensions of parts. The faster cooling is slow over rate of ferrite is important [3, 4]. In this paper, we tested three types of sand casting: sand –based sodium silicate, furan resin and green sand on samples spherical graphite cast iron of different thickness. The objective in this article is to determine the number of grains of graphite and ferrite for each type of sand casting under the same experimental conditions including the cooling rate and chemical composition of the liquid metal.

The results of studies on the use of FeSi5%Mg magnesium alloy in modern cored wire injection method for production of nodular and vermicular graphite cast irons were described. The injection of Mg cored wire length is a treatment method which can be used to process The injection of Mg cored wire length is a treatment method which can be used to process iron melted in an electric induction furnace. This paper describes the results of using a high-magnesium ferrosilicon alloy in cored wire (Mg recovery 47-70%) for the production of vermicular and nodular graphite cast irons at in at least 13 foundries. The results of calculations and experiments have indicated the length of the cored wire to be injected basing on the initial sulfur content and weight of the treated melt. The results of numerous trials have shown that the magnesium cored wire process can produce high quality nodular and vermicular graphite irons under the specific industrial conditions of the above mentioned foundries. It has also been proved that in the manufacture of nodular graphite iron, the cost of the nodulariser in the form of elastic cored wire is lower than the cost of the FeSiMg5 master alloys.
