The paper studies convergenceof the Monotone Structural Evolution (MSE), a computational method of optimal control. The principles of MSE are described and an expository example presents the method in action. It is then proved that under appropriate assumptions the method is convergent to the decision space stationarity conditions. Observations on ﬁnite convergence and on connections with Pontryagin’s maximum principle are also provided.

Celem pracy było optymalne zaprojektowanie struktury kompozytu, tak aby materiał ten spełniał stawiane wymagania w zakresie określonych własności termicznych. Do rozwiązania sformułowanego zadania zastosowano gradientową metodę optymalizacyjną opartą na analizie wrażliwości funkcjonału celu w sposób bezpośredni rozszerzoną o metodę elementów skończonych analizy przepływu ciepła.

The purpose of this work was the optimal designing of composite structure in order to obtain the material that fulfils imposed requirements on thermal properties. The gradient oriented algorithm was applied, in which the desired first order sensitivities of objective functional were calculated using the direct approach. To analyse the problem of heat transfer within structure domain, the finite element method was utilised.
