An improved feature based image fusion technique for enhancement of liver lesions

This paper describes two methods for enhancement of edge and texture of medical images. In the first method optimal kernel size of range filter suitable for enhancement of liver and lesions is deduced. The results have been compared with conventional edge detection algorithms. In the second method the feasibility of feature based pixel wise image fusion for enhancing abdominal images is investigated. Among the different algorithms developed in the medical image fusion pixel level fusion is capable of retaining the maximum relevant information with better implementation and computational efficiency. Conventional image fusion includes multi-modal fusion and multi-resolution fusion. The present work attempts to fuse together, texture enhanced and edge enhanced images of the input image in order to obtain significant enhancement in the output image. The algorithm is tested in low contrast medical images. The result shows an improvement in contrast and sharpness of output image which will provide a basis for a better visual interpretation leading to more accurate diagnosis. Qualitative and quantitative performance evaluation is done by calculating information entropy, MSE, PSNR, SSIM and Tenengrad values.

Przedstawiono wpływ, jaki na wynik segmentacji wododziałowej obrazów barwnych ma zastosowanie różnych metod tworzenia obrazu gradientowego. Omówiono główne metody tworzenia obrazu gradientowego oraz ich wpływ na wyniki segmentacji wododziałowej. Przedstawiono także porównanie wyników segmentacji uzyskanych w wyniku stosowania różnych metod wyznaczania obrazów gradientowych.

In this paper the influence of various methods for creating of gradient image on the results of watershed image segmentation method is presented. The main methods of gradient image creating are described and its influence on the results of color images watershed segmentation is presented. The comparison of the final segmentation results obtained by the usage of different gradient image creating method is also presented.

Opracowanie zawiera sprawozdanie z badań nad przebiegiem Krzywej Redukcji Obrazu dla różnych typów obrazów (z teksturą i bez, z różnym stopniem wypełnienia obrazu) oraz różnych stopni filtracji wstępnej filtrem gaussowskim. Scharakteryzowano krzywe dla wymienionych przypadków i podjęto próbę interpretacji określonego przebiegu krzywej przy różnych parametrach.

This paper encloses a report on research concerning the nature of the Curve of Image Reduction shape. It is applied to the various types of images (with and without texture, with different image content) as well as different degree of preceding filtering with gaussian filter. There are characterized curves for mentioned cases and attempted to interprete this shapes of the curves taking into account different parameters.
