In the shadow of discoveries of large deposits of mineral resources in Poland after World War II, intensive exploration works were carried out, but the results of this research did not bring such spectacular effects. Exploration of Zn-Pb deposits conducted in the vicinity of historic deposits of Tarnowskie Góry and Bytom led to documentation of the Zawiercie, Goluchowice and Marciszów deposits. With some successes, exploration works of metal ore deposits in Paleozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks of the NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were carried out. In this area, the Myszków Mo-W-Cu mineral deposit was confirmed, representing the porphyry copper genetic type. Moreover, in the area of Mrzyglód, the promising mineralization zone was found, requiring further geological research. The exploration of uranium and rare earth element ores did not lead to documentation of the deposits, nevertheless they made it possible to recognize all geological structures in Poland in terms of the possibility of occurrence of ore deposit occurrence of these metals. The prospecting works for these goals was carried out with a relatively small scale and were limited of the Sudetes, where exploitation took place on a fairly large scale in the past (Zloty Stok, Radzimowice, Klecza-Radomice, Wądroże Wielkie). The gold concentration occurring in the Zechstein Kupferschiefer formation and the porphyry copper mineralisation in NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were also studied. The PGI participated in the exploration of mineral resources in marine areas, where besides the hydrocarbon exploration in the Polish economic zone, research on the Baltic polymetallic nodules was carried out, and within the INTEROCEANMETAL consortium the raw material potential of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific was studied.

Zbadano możliwość zastosowania mobilnego koncentratora grawitacyjnego do poszukiwań złota w okolicy Złotoryi. W koncentratach powstałych w wyniku wzbogacania materiału aluwialnego okolicznych strumieni stwierdzono występowanie minerałów tlenkowych uwolnionych, tj. magnetytu, hematytu, ilmenitu, rutylu, anatazu, kasyterytu, goethytu, psylomelanu, piroluzytu oraz kuprytu.

Mobile gravity concentrator was used to search for gold near Złotoryja. Oxide minerals (magnetite, hematite, ilmenite, rutile, anatase, cassiterite, goethite, psilomelane, pyrolusite and cuprite) and monazite, wolframite, zirconium, scheelite, garnets were found in the concentrates from alluvial’s material. Additionally sulfides and arsenic sulfides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, galena, marcasite, framboidal pyrite and covellite) were also found in the concentrate. During the study, material revealed the presence of native minerals and metals as well as their alloys (native gold, anthropogenic gold, Ag-gold, native silver, metallic lead, copper metal, Fe-silicide and spherule Ti-V-Fe). Anthropogenic gold has a spongy structure and contains trace amounts of Fe, Ni, and Hg.

Seven prospective areas have been delineated for gold deposits of vein and metasomatic types in the Sudetes (Kłodzko–Złoty Stok, Southern Kaczawa Mountains and Rudawy Janowickie prospective areas), on the Fore-Sudetic Block (Wądroże Wielkie) and in the contact zone of the Małopolska Block with the Upper Silesia Block (Dolina Będkowska, Pilica and Mysłów prospective areas). In total they are covering ca. 285.5 km2, (ca.252 km2 in the Sudetes and ca. 22 km2 on the Fore-Sudetic Block). The prospective areas were recognized on the basis of current regulations, which defined marginal parameters of specific deposit and delineated its borders together with application of adequate quantitative Au deposit models supported by ore parameters from the old mining records. Total predicted/estimated gold resources (prognostic + prospective resources),which are depending on the applied parameters, are from ca. 9.4 Mg (for n = 16 ore bodies) to 21.5 Mg (for n = 64 o.b.). The auriferous ores of the vein and metasomatic types (blind bodies) are associated with the metamorphosed volcanic-sedimentary Paleozoic formation in Lower Silesia and with contact-metasomatic zones around Variscan granitoid intrusions in southern Poland. The greatest estimated Au resources were recognized in the following areas: K³odzko–Z³oty Stok – ca. 6.3 Mg Au (for n = 7 o.b. – skarns, veins and beresites), Southern Kaczawa Mountains – ca. 4.8 Mg Au (for n = 15 o.b.) and Rudawy Janowickie – ca. 4.5 Mg Au (for n = 20 o.b. of vein and/or skarn types). In the contact zone of the Małopolska Block with the Upper Silesia Block the prospective areas are associated with the marginal zones (epithermal Au veins) around the granitoid/porphyry-related mineralization of the Mo-Cu-W type. The limited ore prospecting causes difficulties in estimation of Au resources in that area. The available data has allowed for a rough estimation of Au resources from ca. 1 to 3.5 Mg (for n = 5–21 o.b.). In most of the recognized Au prospective areas, auriferous mineralization is in paragenetic association with refractory gold sulfides and only sporadically appears as native gold or electrum mineralization (mainly in quartz veins). A new stage of gold prospection is highly recommended especially within the abandoned gold mining areas in the Sudetes. An application of modern geophysics (VLF and IP) followed by shallow drillings should bring new discoveries of gold deposits. In the report, environmental and spatial conflicts have also been pointed out within the specific gold prospective areas in relation to the presence of National Parks, NATURE 2000 areas, underground water reservoirs, etc.

Within the context of the extended economic crisis, as a whole, gold and silver ores are now largely paid attention to by investors. In Romania, they have carried out, during the last years, a large number of researches regarding the prospection and planning of the exploitation of new Au-Ag ore deposits. The University of Petrosani, owing to its Laboratory of Rocks Mechanics, largely contributed to such research works, through the geomechanical analyses gathered from the mining areas of the “Golden Quadrangle” in the Apuseni Mountains. This paper presents the results of these geomechanical studies made in perimeters mentioned. The hereby paper displays conclusions determined by the geotechnical researches of the mining perimeter of Certej, performed in the Geomechanics Laboratory of the University of Petrosani, with a view to opening and exploiting the gold and silver deposit as part of a new mining project.

W kontekście długotrwałego ekonomicznego kryzysu, uwagę inwestorów przykuwają głównie rudy złota i srebra. W Rumunii przeprowadzili oni w ciągu ostatnich lat wiele badań z zakresu prospekcji i planowania eksploatacji nowych złóż Au-Ag. Uniwersytet Petrosani, dzięki swojemu Laboratorium Mechaniki Skał, miał znaczny udział w tych badaniach, wykonując analizy geomechaniczne na próbach z rejonów górniczych „Złotego Czworokąta” w górach Apuseni. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań geomechanicznych dotyczących ww. rejonu. Prezentuje wnioski z badań geotechników z rejonu Certej, przeprowadzonych w Laboratorium Geomechaniki Uniwersytetu Petrosani, z perspektywy rozpoczęcia nowego projektu eksploatacji złoża złota i srebra.
