Content available The competitiveness of Polish furniture exports
EN
This paper examines the competitiveness of Polish exports of furniture using data on value added in exports. Based on the OECD/Eurostat TEC and TiVA databases, we assess the propensity and intensity of exporting by different types of Polish furniture producers. Then we examine the domestic and foreign contributions to gross exports and analyse the participation of the Polish furniture industry in global value chains. Our analysis covers the years 2002-2011 and includes comparisons with other CEE countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia) and leading European exporters of furniture (Italy and Germany). The results indicate that the patterns of gross trade in furniture differ from value added trade patterns, and that Polish furniture exports are not as competitive in value added terms as in gross terms. Furthermore, the share of foreign value added in gross exports increases along with the proportion of those exports accounted for by exports of intermediate products. The data indicate that the countries’ backward participation in GVCs increased in the years 2002-2011. This may generate both opportunities and risks, which are discussed in the paper.

This research has further characterized the dimensions of the Five Factor Model (Big Five) in the context of entrepreneurship, based on several studies. Our survey shows that the analysed psychological skills in management, which are important for success in business, are perceived as important in two samples (entrepreneurs and managers in one group and students in second group). Research confirms the assumptions that entrepreneurs/managers and students are aware of the qualitative dimension of management psychological skills important for business. The striking fact was that the psychological variable respect of ethics was ranked in two study groups. The finding confirms the fact that while ethical issues are an imperative of our times, for many businessmen ethics is in last place. The top of the list of students' responses were in skills such as confidence, perseverance and the ability to persuade. Endurance, stress resistance and self-confidence were also identified as priorities in the group of entrepreneurs and managers. From the data, it can be seen that the skills required for business, identified in both study groups as important should be developed and improved through business education.

The emergence of globalization processes and transnational market integration has become a more and more challenging issue for scientific research in many fields, also and in particular within management science. Against this background the paper presents conceptualizations of globalizing networks based on theories and approaches such Global Commodity Chains, Global Value Chains and Global Production Networks. In particular, the paper aims to conceptualize and discuss globalizing networks with a specific focus on foreign direct investments (FDI) and special economic zones (SEZs). The article is based on heuristic approach and in-depth literature study. The text has been prepared based on heuristic approach and literature studies and it can make a small contribution to the conceptualization within in management science theory.

The accession to the European Union contributed to an increase in Poland’s foreign trade, and the growing export market is coupled with an increasing importance of intermediate imports, which is necessary to produce goods of appropriate quality and price. This phenomenon is a part of the process of fragmentation in global value chains. Fragmentation of the value chains should manifest themselves, in particular, in a multi-phase manufacturing process that requires many components of different types. In this paper, the recently available OECD database of the Trade in Value Added (TiVA) has been used to assess changes in the composition of gross exports of Poland and other Central Europe countries. In Poland, practically all sectors show a growing share of the imported value added. The cases analyzed confirm the thesis that the high technology sectors foster fragmentation. In the case of technologically lessadvanced sectors and short-value chains, benefits of fragmentation are limited. The progressing fragmentation and, as a consequence, a growing share of the imported value added made the gross export value (which is commonly used in statistics) of little use for the analysis of the economic role and competitive position of sectors. However, thanks to new projects based on I-O matrices of the global economy, it is possible to decompose gross exports into respective domestic and foreign value-added streams.
