The growth parameters of the Vaccinium myrtillus shoots were studied on a vertical transect crossing localities "Muran" (1080-1110 m a.s.l., skeli-humic podzols, Fageta abietino-piceosa) and "Hliniky" (950-960 m a.s.l, dystric cambisols, Abieti-Fageta inferiora) in the protected zone of the National park "Slovensky raj" (Spis region, East Slovakia). In the localities, both contaminated by air pollution research plots in undamaged and damaged (with lower stand density and canopy compactness) spruce ecosystems were established. The content of Al and Cr was significantly higher in cambisols, and that of Cd - in podzols. The limit values calculated for both soils have been exceeded only in case of mercury. The Al content in bilberry twigs exceeded the background values (by 44-76%) in case of the both plots situated on locality "Muran", and that of Ni and Pb concentrations (by 3-60%) only on damaged plot. The mean content of Ni and Pb was significantly higher in bilberry twigs growing on podzols and the mean content of Al was significantly higher in plants on undamaged plots. The mean length, weight as well as energy content of bilberry twigs were significantly higher in damaged spruce plots (on average by 33%), probably due to favourable light conditions.

In the degraded red soil of subtropical China, restoration activities during the last century have mainly relied on extensive plantations of Pinus massonian. We analyze the changes in the soil macroarthropods in P. massonian plantations and the possible relationships between these changes and soil chemical parameters. The study revealed significant differences in the abundance of soil macroarthropods between the P. massonian plantations and the natural regenerated mesophilous herbosa (Nl). The sharply differentiated pattern of soil macroarthropods seems closely linked to soil chemistry. Significant correlations of the abundance of soil macroarthropods with soil parameters suggest that their populations could have been affected by P massonian. The total abundance, the abundance of Hymenoptera and Termite were less in the P. massonian plantations when compared to the natural regenerated mesophilous herbosa (Nl). This survey showed that P.massonian could adversely affect the decomposer community which could lower the nutrient cycling rate, thus P.massonian may not be an ideal plantation for restoration of eroded Ultisol, Subtropical China.

An occurrence of acid rains on the terrains of Poland caused composition changes and decreasing of soil pH. Between other, aluminum bioavailable forms concentration increase is observed. Aluminum, supposed to be harm-less, happened to be a toxic element in some cases, especially dangerous for coniferous trees. That is why monitoring of the environment should be led on woodland neighboring industrial terrains. The work should allow to lead an agrotechnical operation causing not to pass toxic concentration level. The re-view of the acid soils aluminum concentration assay is showed in this paper.
