Transparent highly viscous lubricants to lubricate girth gears drives, field findings on hand of an example

There are a wide variety of lubricants available for the lubrication of large open gears. These girth gear drives are typically found on driers, tube mills and rotary kilns. In recent years highly viscous, solid-free lubricants have been introduced to lubricate these girth gear drives. In this paper, experience that has been made in the field with transparent, solid-free open gear lubricants will be shown in terms of lubricant consumption, reduction in vibrations and tooth flank temperature. The influence of the surface roughness on the film thickness and therefore on the specific film thickness will be discussed.
