Reconstruction of the 3D geometry of the ossicular chain based on micro-CT imaging

Modelling of the sound transmission process from the external ear canal through the middle ear structures to the cochlea is often performed using the finite element method. This requires knowledge of the geometry of the object being modelled. The paper shows the results of reconstruction of the 3D geometry of the ossicular chain. The micro-CT images of a cadaver's temporal bone were used to carry out the reconstruction process. The obtained geometry may be used not only for modelling of the middle ear mechanics before and after ossicular replacement but also for production of anatomical middle ear prostheses, calculation of inertial properties of the ossicular bones or educating radiologist and otolaryngologist.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki symulacji numerycznych przeprowadzonych na podstawie własnego modelu matematycznego stopu metali w stanie półpłynnym zaimplementowanego w oryginalnym programie komputerowym wykorzystującym metodę elementu skończonego w geometrii trójwymiarowej. Symulacje te dotyczyły następujących przypadków odlewania tiksotropowego: prasowanie próbki cylindrycznej stopu metalu, wytłaczanie materiału z powierzchnią swobodną, i wytłaczanie fragmentu układu kierowniczego samochodu.

The numerical simulations of selected thixoforming processes using an own mathematical model describing metal alloys in the semi-solid state are presented. The model has been implemented in the original computer software used finite element method in 3D geometry. These simulations concerned characteristic processes of thixoforming like: compression experiment for the cylindrical billet of the aluminium alloy, moulding of the material with the free surface, thixocasting of a car’s steering axle.
