Przedstawiono wyniki badań geologicznych francuskiego przyrodnika J.-E. Guettarda (1715-1786) przeprowadzonych w Polsce w latach 1760-1762. Jest on autorem jednego z pierwszych opisów geologii wraz z pierwszą mapą geologiczną Rzeczypospolitej, opisu kopalni soli w Wieliczce, pierwszych ilustracji skamieniałości i innych. Guettard był jednym z najlepszych znawców geologii Polski w XVIII w., a jego monografie są pionierską próbą analizy głównych elementów geologicznych obszaru Polski. Jego prace geologiczne wywarły znaczący wpływ na późniejsze badania geologiczne w Polsce. Rozważania Guettarda z kopalni soli w Wieliczce umożliwiły mu wyciągnięcie wniosków dotyczących tworzenia się złóż soli kamiennej, jak również podjęcie próby opracowania metod poszukiwań nowych złóż soli kamiennej na innych obszarach.

The results of geologic research of French naturalist J.E. Guetard (1715-1786) carried out in Poland in the years 1760-1786 are presented. He is the author of the early descriptions of geology together with geologic map of the Republic, description of salt mine at Wieliczka, first illustrations of fossils and others. Guettard was one of the best experts on geology of Poland in 18th century, and his monographs pioneer attempt of analysis of main geologic elements of Polish territory. His geologic works had the significant on the later geological research in Poland. Guettard.s considerations about the salt mine at Wieliczka enabled him to draw conclusions referring to rock-salt deposits formation as well as to take up attempts to work out the methods of new rock-salt deposits exploration on other territories.

Initial tectonic movements of Adriatic Microplate result in dominating compression in the area of Dinarides. Collected structural data, compared with surface and depth data, with seismological and geodetic measurements taken in the account enabled the classifications of structures. Deformations and movements of structures directly depend on the stress orientation. This orientation varies from between 340-160° to 30-210°. In order to visualize the stress orientation, formation of different types of structures and their movements, examples of compressional structures are shown, as well as rotations of structures and conditions of creation of extensional structures. Finally, the map with fault zones is included, too. The data show narrowing of the area of Adriatic Microplate and the existence of its southern and northern part. Both parts are changing movement directions, leading to more tectonic activity. In active areas, formation of structures is recognized, and causality with fault locations and seismic activity is established. The amplitudes of tectonic movements derived from geodetic measurements between 1994 and 1998 represent important contribution for better understanding the tectonic activities in the area.

The paper presents basic problems of research and evaluation of geologic conditions, which are essential for optimization of municipal and industrial (non-municipal) waste storage sites. The topic was analyzed in context of the new legal regulations, and the new draft of the Ministry of the Environment regulation on the issue of dumps, using the author's own large research experience, and data from the literature on the subject and from archive materials. Special attention was paid to the issue of geologic conditions of prospective dumping sites localization, to mineral isolation barriers, to the research scope and techniques for wet dumps (deposit ponds) and dumping grounds, geologic inspection during exploitation, monitoring, liquidation and dump area recultivation.
