A new geologic map of the crystalline basement of NE Poland has been constrained on the basis of the magnetic and gravity imaging, data from seismic profiles of POLONAISE'97 and CELEBRATION'2000, and extensive geochemical, isotopic and U-Pb dating studies of drill core samples. This updated reconstruction of the hidden southwestern margin of the East European Craton revealed of several late Svecofennian orogenic domains with ages in the range 2.0–1.74 Ga, belonging to the Fennoscandia. The age of these Paleoproterozoic domains is becoming regionally younger towards NW. Furthermore, there is two Paleoproterozoic domains, which form integral part of the westernmost youngest rim of the Sarmatia block. During the early Mesoproterozoic between 1.54 and 1.45 Ga intracratonic plutons of the AMCG suite intruded a large area of the Mazury-Warmia, Pomorze and SE Baltic region. Several deep-sourced ultramafic-alkaline bodies of Early Carboniferous age (354–338 Ma) are related to the youngest magmatic event.

Fałd Strachociny położony jest na NW od Sanoka. Rejon ten, ze względu na naturalne wypływy gazu na powierzchnię oraz odkrycie złoża gazu w piaskowcach istebniańskich, był miejscem intensywnych badań geologicznych; zarówno powierzchniowych, jak i wiertniczych. Efektem tych prac geologicznych, prowadzonych przez wielu geologów, było opracowanie w 1954 roku mapy geologicznej fałdu Strachociny przez S. Depowskiego, przy wykorzystaniu materiałów także innych badaczy – m.in.: S. Wdowiarza i J. Hempla. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie wyników prac tych geologów i poprzedza drugą część artykułu, w której zostaną przedstawione wyniki aktualnie prowadzonych badań kartograficznych na fałdzie Strachociny. Badania te wykonywane są przez autora artykułu w związku z pracami na PMG Strachocina i mają na celu uściślenie dotychczasowej budowy geologicznej, w oparciu zarówno o dane terenowe, jak i prace wiertnicze wykonane na fałdzie w ostatnim czasie.

The Strachocina fold is located to NW of Sanok. Due to the natural outflows of natural gas to the surface and finding a gas reservoir in the Istebna sandstones, the area was intensively geologically surveyed both on the surface and by boreholes drilling. In 1954, as a result of the geologists’ work, a geologic map of the Strachocina fold was devised by S. Depowski, who also used the materials prepared by other researchers, including S. Wdowiarz and J. Hempel. This paper presents the results of the work of those geologists and it will precede the second part of the article in which the results of present cartography studies (mapping) of the Strachocina fold are going to be shown. The surveys and studies are being conducted by the author of this article in connection with massive earthwork on the Strachocina UGS facility and they are aimed at more specific studies of the geological structure of the fold on the basis of both field data and drilling jobs performed on the fold in recent times.
