Interdepartmental Task Force for Geoinformation Intrastructure was set up in mid-2001 on the initiative of General Surveyor of Poland. The Task Force included representatives of ministries and other central government offices directly involved in acquisition and processing of geospatial data, management of the resources of these data and practical use of geoinformation to meet the principles of sustainable development and growing needs of information society. The activities of the Task Force were aimed at the following three directions: 1) broadening of interdepartamental cooperation in the area of geoinformation, 2) supporting research and initiatives leading to creation of geoinformation infrastructure in Poland and in Europe, 3) dissemination of knowledge about geoinformation infrastructures, taking into account domestic experience and outstanding foreign solutions. The activities of the Task Force were supported both in its substance and organisation by the Polish Association for Spatial Information and the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography. Offices and institutions represented in the Task Force carried out i.a. tasks consisting in organization of the following events: 1) The Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography organised two meetings devoted to General Geographic Database of Poland, to legal regulations of the National Land Information System and to other current issues, 2) The Ministry of Environment organised a seminar presenting research carried out in the area of geoinformation in four scientific institutes of the Ministry, 3) The Board of Military Geography organised a seminar on digital resources of the Board and of the Topographical Service of Polish Army, the seminar also dealt with protection and making available spatial databases and with metadata system for spatial databases, 4) The Polish Association for Spatial Information organised a seminar on spatial data infrastructure at European and global level, which due to large number of participants was organized twice, 5) The Institute for Geodesy and Cartography with the participation of the Polish Association for Spatial Information organised a seminar on participation of Poland in the European Spatial Data Infrastructure, 6) The Polish Association for Spatial Information organised three annual conferences of the Association, which in great measure included the problems of spatial data infrastructures, and in particular: m Conference XI (2001) included a review of achievements and development plans of offices and institutions with nationwide scope of influence in the area of geoinformation, m Conference XII (2002) was held with active participation of members of the Task Force on Geoinformation Infrastructure in accordance with their interests, m Conference XIII (2003) included a workshop on methodological and technological fundamentals of geoinformation infrastructures. In the result of discussions held, an opinion of Polish geoinformation community on European Spatial Data Infrastructure was worked out, which influenced the solutions adopted for the INSPIRE legislative initiative. Publishing activities are also worth mentioning. For instance, in 2003 the Polish Association for Spatial Information published: m Lexicon of Geomatics, focusing on the terminology used in the area of spatial data infrastructures, m SDI Compendium, constituting Polish updated version of widely known manual The SDI Cookbook developed by Global Spatial Data Infrastructure, m Annals of Geomatics devoted to much extent to spatial data infrastructures. The activities of the Task Force for Geoinformation Infrastructure was undoubtedly fruitful. Its results will improve and make easier works of currently appointed Task Force on National Spatial Data Infrastructure, which will face new challenges connected with Poland.s membership in the European Union.
