Gas carriers are one of the most advanced types of ships and are equipped with the latest technological achievements. Due to the development of this industry, the demand for ethylene transport by sea has increased significantly in recent years. Nonetheless, it is one of the most problematic loads in terms of loading operations. Due to the small density differences between ethylene and nitrogen, ethylene is one of the most problematic hydrocarbons with respect to the efficient gasification of cargo tanks. Additionally, ethylene is one of the most expensive cargoes carried on gas carriers. The above aspects make it necessary to carry out a detailed analysis of the flushing of nitrogen-loaded cargo tanks with ethylene vapors to determine the range of technical parameters to enable more efficient tank gassing-up. This paper provides a detailed analysis of an experimental cargo tank gassing-up operation on an ethylene carrier. The process was carried out in accordance with previously-determined assumptions to optimize the discussed operations, assess how the cargo tank pressure influences this process, reduce cargo loss during gassing-up, and eliminate cargo loss during its cooling. The conclusions from this experiment provide guidelines for subsequent tests.

This article presents the significance of LNG terminal safety issues in natural gas sea transport. It shows particular requirements for LNG transmission installations resulting from the specific properties of LNG. Out of the multilayer critical safety areas comprising structural elements of the terminal safety system, possibilities to decrease the risk of emergency occurrence on LNG terminals have been selected. Tasks performed by the LNG terminal, together with its own personnel and the outside one, have been defined. General theses for LNG terminal safety have been formulated.

W artykule przedstawiono znaczenie problemu bezpieczeństwa terminali LNG w transporcie morskim gazu ziemnego. Wskazano szczególne wymagania jakie stwarza instalacji przesył LNG, a wynikające z jego szczególnych własności. Na tle wielopoziomowych krytycznych obszarów bezpieczeństwa stanowiących elementy składowe struktury systemu bezpieczeństwa terminali wyselekcjonowano możliwości zmniejszania ryzyka wystąpienia sytuacji awaryjnej na terminalu LNG. Zdefiniowano zadania wykonywane przez terminal LNG tak z udziałem personelu obsługującego terminal, jak i personelu zewnętrznego zatrudniony na terminalu LNG. Sformułowano generalne tezy dla bezpieczeństwa terminali LNG.

Basing on the evolution of application of different kinds of fuel supplying main engines of gas carriers, this article justifies the need to compare the qualities of these engines. Mass-size, energy and energy-ecological effectiveness indicators have been defined. Properties of self-ignition engines run on one or two kinds of fuel have been considered. Values of key performance indicators have been estimated. On the basis of the identified sets of indicators, comparative analysis of a dual fuel engine with single fuel ones has been carried out.

Posługując się ewolucją zastosowania różnych rodzajów paliw zasilających silniki główne gazowców, w artykule uzasadniono potrzebę konfrontacji cech tych silników. Zdefiniowano wskaźniki efektywności masowo-gabarytowe, energetyczne i energetyczno-ekologiczne. Rozpatrzono cechy silników o zapłonie samoczynnym zasilanych jednym i dwoma rodzajami paliw. Oszacowano wartości kluczowych wskaźników efektywności. W oparciu o zidentyfikowane zbiory wskaźników przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą cech silnika dwupaliwowego z jednopaliwowymi.
