Sulpfur has accompanied us since the dawn of time. Wincenty Kadłubek mentions it for the first time, presenting the legend of the destruction of the Wawel Dragon. According to Dr. A. Wójcik, sulphur could have been one of the reasons for moving the capital from Kraków to Warsaw. The exploitation of this mineral lasted about 500 years. During this time, approximately 700,000 tons of sulphur ore were mined in an area of approximately 5 km, drilling approximately 1,000 shafts and leaving 600 heaps. Following J. Esprinohard, Jan Pazdur quotes a message from 1597 that “when the plague prevails in Kraków, which happens often, most of the citizens leave the city and live for some time near the sulphur mine in Swoszowice and no one is affected by the disease at that time”. Sulphur mining is a niche business, currently as much as 99 percent of this raw material is obtained worldwide in large-scale desulfurization processes of gas, oil and exhaust gases. This was not the case before; sulphur mining in Swoszowice was an important branch of the economy of the Kingdom of Poland and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Sulphur mining in Swoszowice was finally discontinued over 70 years ago, but it is worth knowing the history of mining in this oldest and longest operating mine in Poland.

The publication presents partial results of hearing screening tests conducted in 2019 among employees of 37 hard coal mines located in the Śląskie and Małopolskie voivodships. The tests were carried out in different cities of both voivodships using the Mobile Hearing Diagnosis Center, which parked near the selected mine and specialized hearing diagnostics points of the ACSłuchmed Sp. z o. o. from Lublin. At the diagnostic points, detailed total audiometry tests were conducted on people diagnosed with hearing disorders as part of screening tests. The obtained results allowed to identify branches and workplaces with the highest risk of noise hazard in mines. The presented publication shows the results of noise measurement during blasting works and the results of anonymous surveys conducted among employees of the Department of Blasting Technology of hard coal mines. The survey concerned the subjective feelings of employees regarding noise levels at the workplace and its impact on their well-being and state of health. In the publication summary, the author draws attention to the need to take measures to constantly control the noise level at the workplace and introduce solutions that will enable its reduction and allow for better protection of employees against its damaging consequences.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę utraty słuchu wśród górników kopalń węgla kamiennego. Opisuje zagrożenia związane z hałasem występujące w górniczym środowisku pracy. Przedstawia wyniki krótkich badań testowych identyfikujących zaburzenia słuchu wśród wybranej grupy pracowników kopalń. Próbuje ocenić słabe i mocne strony występującego w Polsce systemu diagnostyki słuchu. Przedstawia ciekawe wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród górników z zakresu zagrożeń hałasem oraz zwraca uwagę na możliwość wprowadzenia innowacyjnych rozwiązań z zakresu diagnostyki i profilaktyki zaburzeń słuchu w polskich kopalniach.

The article deals with the problem of hearing loss among miners of hard coal mines. Describes hazards related to noise occurring in the mining work environment. It presents the results of short test tests identifying hearing disorders among a selected group of mine employees. The article also tries to assess the weaknesses and strengths of the hearing diagnostics system in Poland. It presents interesting results of surveys conducted among miners in the field of noise hazards and draws attention to the possibility of introducing innovative solutions in the field of diagnostics and prevention of hearing disorders in Polish mines.

The comparative study of working conditions in areas of mining industry and health care services in the area of MSDs is presented in the paper. The examined working environments are considered as demanding in terms of working organization as well as technical, communication and environmental aspects. Such circumstances need to use of specific rules and requirements for maintaining work safety of MSDs. Taking this as a background, a classification of the factors was defined in selected fields in order to make it possible to extract the similar assessment criteria. These were used to analyze the problem areas in terms of working conditions which influence on prevalence of MSDs. The analysis outcomes are the basis for seeking universal methods and tools supporting work safety assessment among mining workers and medical staff. As a case study, the working activities of mining excavations staff and surgical team members performing surgeries in an operating room were considered.

W artykule zaprezentowano studia porównawcze, dotyczące warunków pracy w dwóch środowiskach: w górnictwie węgla kamiennego oraz w ochronie zdrowia. Środowiska poddane analizie nacechowane są wysokim stopniem ryzyka zawodowego, związanego z występowaniem schorzeń w układzie mięśniowo-szkieletowym. Tak zarysowane tło badań stanowiło podstawę do identyfikacji głównych problemów w zakresie ergonomii i pozycji ciała, a także określenie możliwych przyczyn i skutków występowania obciążeń posturalnych. Podstawą badań było dokonanie analizy porównawczej czynników technicznych i organizacyjnych kształtujących warunki pracy na stanowiskach górnika dołowego i chirurga laparoskopowego. Uzyskane wyniki badań, wydawać by się mogło w skrajnie różnych obszarach problemowych, dają podstawę do poszukiwania uniwersalnych metod i narzędzi wspomagających ocenę zagrożeń zdrowotnych.

W artykule opisano wybrane metody wyznaczania dróg ucieczkowych z rejonów kopalni zagrożonych pożarem. Zaproponowano podział dróg ucieczkowych na dwie kategorie: proste i złożone. Zaproponowano także uwzględnienie we wzorze określającym czas ewakuacji wieku górnika, jego stażu pracy w kopalni, a także wysokości wyrobiska i stopnia jego zadymienia. Cechy te ujęto w formie współczynników. Zaproponowano nową metodę opartą m.in. o badania z ratownikami w warunkach imitujących wyrobiska w czasie pożaru.

The article describes some of the methods of determining escape routes from areas of the mine endangered with a fire. It has been proposed to divide escape routes into two categories: simple and complex. It has also been proposed to include in the formula of the age of a miner, his work experience in a given mine and also the height of a working and degree of its fuming. These features were considered as coefficients. A new method was proposed based, inter alia, on the examinations with the rescuers in conditions simulating a working during a fire.

W artykule zwrócono uwagę na konieczność i zasadność przeprowadzania tzw. badań użytkowych, celem uzyskania od pracowników opinii o przydatności środków ochrony indywidualnej.

The article presents the principles of personal protection equipment's selection and the equipment of the miners of Kompania Węglowa SA. It describes in detail the rules for the formulation of operational parameters and protective characteristics as well as regulatory requirements, which are published in a publicly accessible document of KW SA: Catalog of descriptive-drawing means of individual protection equipment and the equipment of employees. The article focuses on the necessity and reasonableness of conducting of the so called functional performance research, in order to obtain an opinion from the employees about the suitability of personal protective equipment.
