In today's competitive industry landscape, it is crucial to assess manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency. However, identifying the critical factors that impact productivity can be a daunting task due to their intricate nature. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel approach that combines fuzzy logic with TOPSIS to comprehensively evaluate manufacturing company efficiency. The method presented by the author treats this as a complex MCDM problem and accommodates diverse factors with distinct weights, which are crucial for a thorough efficiency analysis. This approach was applied to evaluate potential manufacturing entities in Cyprus through a three-step process. Firstly, relevant criteria were curated using literature and expert insights, endowing them with linguistic terms that were then translated into fuzzy values. Next, fuzzy TOPSIS evaluated efficiency, and sensitivity analysis gauged the criteria weight impact on decisions. This article introduces a new methodology for holistic manufacturing company evaluation. The synergy of fuzzy-set theory and TOPSIS proves effective amidst the ambiguity inherent in performance measurement. By uniting these methodologies, this study advances manufacturing performance evaluation, aiding informed decision-making. The research contributes a pioneering method to enhance manufacturing efficiency assessment while accommodating uncertainty through fuzzy logic integration.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to compare the results of the constructed effective portfolios and non-effective portfolios build on the basis of the value of the indicator constituting a synthetic assessment of decision variants. Design/methodology/approach: The article uses the multi-criteria TOPSIS method in the standard and fuzzy approach. It was used to evaluate listed companies that were examined in terms of selected fundamental and market characteristics. Taking into account the fuzzy method made it possible to treat the values of criteria from three years as triangular fuzzy numbers, and the values of the measure on the basis of which the ranking was created were also used to build non-effective portfolios. Findings: A multi-criteria evaluation of selected listed companies was performed and, on the basis of the obtained rankings, the sets constituting the basis for the construction of effective and non-effective portfolios were selected. The designated effective portfolios (after pre-selection using the FTOPSIS method) were in most cases more profitable than the market portfolio, while the non-effective portfolios, using TOPSIS as the pre-selection method, were (with one exception) more profitable than the effective portfolios. Research limitations/implications: It was not possible to unequivocally recommend the approach used, although the results appear promising. Practical implications: Taking into account the proposed approach, one can methodically build more profitable and more attractive portfolios. Originality/value: Non-standard approach to criteria assessments and the use of metacriterion values to determine the portfolio structure. The considerations may be of interest to stock market investors.

The paper provides a multiple-experts Fuzzy-TOPSIS decision-making model for the selection among maintenance contractors based on the quality of tendering documents. The study introduces a set of selection criteria utilizing benefit and cost criteria from literature. The proposed model aggregates subjective linguistic assessments of multiple experts that express their opinions on the degree of importance of criteria and allows multiple decisionmakers to evaluate the compliance of contractors’ documents. For a case study, the model is applied to select among contractors tendering to maintain the heavy-duty cranes of an international steel company from literature. Several decision-making scenarios are investigated, and major changes in the final decision are observed. The changes in obtained results illustrate the need to better address uncertainties in rating and tendering an overqualified contractor at a higher cost.

The aim of this study was to integrate SWOT analysis and the fuzzy TOPSIS method to develop a strategy for the Turkish RMG sector. SWOT analysis was used to determine the strengths&weaknesses and opportunities & threats of the sector. New strategies were developed using SWOT analysis data, and then the fuzzy TOPSIS method was used to rank the strategies for the sector. Four strategies were determined: (1) building global brands, (2) providing government incentives to increase the competitive power of the sector, (3) effective use of e-commerce, and (4) transforming the sector into an attractive business area for young people. Empirical results indicate that the third strategy is ideal for the sector. However, SWOT analysis falls short of determining strategies for any sector. The ability of strategy making processes to yield positive outcomes depends largely on managers’ participation in decision-making processes. Fuzzy TOPSIS was used to model the inherent uncertainty in human knowledge and behaviour and to incorporate sector managers’ views into the system to assess alternatives that integrate SWOT.

Rozmytą metodę TOPSIS wykorzystano do modelowania nieodłącznej niepewności w ludzkiej wiedzy i zachowaniu oraz do włączenia poglądów menedżerów sektora do systemu w celu oceny alternatyw integrujących SWOT.

Occupational health and safety (OHS) management is a cycle of decision-making processes, many of which are in fact multi-criterion processes in nature. Therefore, it is important to look for and develop tools to support decision-makers in their actions aimed at improving work safety levels. The objective of this paper is to propose and verify the fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method applied to compare and assess the ways OHS management systems function in different companies. The fuzzy TOPSIS method has already been used for a number of years in assessments of alternative solutions in many different areas, but the application that uses ordered fuzzy numbers is quite original in nature. It is especially beneficial to use the fuzzy approach in OHS management systems, as it makes it possible for experts to assess different criteria using most frequently used linguistic variables. The adopted approach was verified in the study of OHS management systems in four furniture manufacturing companies. Assessment criteria were requirements of the PN-N 18001:2004 Standard. Thanks to the ordered fuzzy TOPSIS method, the analysed OHS management systems were streamlined from the point of view of 24 assessment criteria, and the best and the worst functioning system was identified. The approach presented here may constitute a significant tool for improving OHS management systems.

Continuous improvement is the core of any successful firm. Talking about manufacturing industries, there is huge potential for continuous improvement to be made in various work areas. Such improvement can be made in any section of industry in any form such as quality improvement, waste minimization, system improvement, layout improvement, ergonomics, cost savings, etc. This case study considers an example of a manufacturing firm which wanted to start a quality improvement project (QIP) on its premises. Various products were available, but with dwindling quality levels. However, the real task was the choice of a product for upcoming QIP, as it is well known that success heavily depends upon the selection of a particular project. This is also because of the amount of effort in terms of time, money and manpower that is put into a project nowadays. The authors’ objective was to compare three techniques, namely, cost of poor quality (COPQ), conditional probability and fuzzy TOPSIS for selecting the right project based on this specific firm. The pros and cons of these approaches have also been discussed. This study should prove to be instructive for the realization of QIPs in similar types of industry.

The selection of the mining method is one of the most crucial decisions in the stage of designing mines. This depends on some underlying parameters such as economic, technical and efficiency properties. The parameters may be collected and examined in a wide range of methods including core drilling and developmental planning of an active mine. The process of selecting the mining method can be described as multi-criterion decision-making due to the several factors involved in the evaluation process. Through the multi-criterion decision-making, the structure of problems is analyzed. However, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) is often criticized because of its inability to handle uncertain and imprecise problems. Thus, the fuzzy decision-making is proposed as a powerful tool. Therefore in this paper, the fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (Fuzzy TOPSIS) is used to select the best mining method among square-set stoping, cut-and-fill stoping, shrinkage stoping and sublevel stoping at the Kamar Mahdi fluorine mine based on 14 criteria such as deposit thickness, deposit dip, grade distribution, joint spacing in deposit and hanging wall as well as the cost of mining. Other criteria with the same importance for the four alternatives are neglected. Finally, the alternatives are ranked and the shrinkage stoping is proposed as the optimal mining method for this mine.

Plant species selection is a multi-criteria evaluation decision and has a strategic importance for many companies. The conventional methods for plant species selection are inadequate for dealing with the imprecise or vague nature of linguistic assessment. To overcome this difficulty, fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making methods are proposed. The aim of this study is to use the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (F.TOPSIS) methods for the selection of plant species in mine reclamation plan. Plant type selection and planting to protect the environment and the reclamation of the mine are some of the most important solutions. Therefore, the objective of the current research study is to choose the proper plant types for reclamation of Sarcheshmeh Copper Mine using Fuzzy-topsis method. In this regard, primarily, surrounding area of Sarcheshmeh copper mine, one of the world’s 10 biggest copper mine which is located near Kerman city of Iran, are surveyed, to choose the best plant type for reclamation of disturbance area. With this respect, based on reclamation plan, primary criteria were consisted of kinds of post mining land use, climate, and nature of soil. Comparison matrixes were then obtained based on experts’ opinion and plant types were subsequently prioritized using the Fuzzy Topsis method. Secondary factors considered through the analysis were as follows: perspective of the region, resistance against disease and insects, strength and method of growth, availability to plant type, economic efficiency, protection of soil, storing water, and prevention of pollution. Finally, suitable plant types in the mining perimeter were prioritized as: Amygdalus scoparia, Tamarix, Pistachio Wild, Ephedra, Astragalus, Salsola, respectively.

Głównym celem obecnego studium jest wybór odpowiednich gatunków roślin do wykorzystania projekcie rekultywacji terenów kopalni miedzi Sarcheshmeh z wykorzystaniem metod logiki rozmytej TOPSIS. W pierwszym rzędzie przeprowadzono badania gruntów wokół kopalni miedzi Sarchesmeh, w pobliżu miejscowości Kerman w Iranie (jednej z dziesięciu największych na świecie kopalni miedzi) w celu wyboru najlepszych typów roślin do wykorzystania do rekultywacji naruszonych działalnością górniczą terenów. Określono podstawowe kryteria wyboru, biorąc pod uwagę plan rekultywacji: sposoby wykorzystania terenu, klimat oraz rodzaje gleb. Otrzymano macierze porównawcze uzyskane na podstawie opinii ekspertów, następnie dokonano określenia priorytetów dla poszczególnych roślin przy pomocy metody TOPSIS, wykorzystującej logikę rozmytą. W analizie uwzględniono następujące czynniki drugorzędne: perspektywy dla regionu, odporność na choroby i owady szkodniki, wytrzymałość i sposób uprawy, dostępność danego gatunku roślin, wydajność ekonomiczna, ochrona gleb, zdolność zatrzymywania wody, zapobieganie zanieczyszczeniom. W końcowym etapie dokonano wyboru najkorzystniejszych dla danego terenu górniczego gatunków roślin, podając kolejno: Amygdalus scoparia, Tamarix, Pistachio Wild, Ephedra, Astragalus, Salsola.

In today's world where intensive competition exists between enterprises, it is of great importance to work in cooperation with the right suppliers. Selection of the right suppliers is a significant factor in the success of enterprises. In the selection of the best supplier (s), the strengths and weaknesses of potential suppliers should be taken into consideration. Many qualitative and quantitative criteria are included in this selection process as well as the decision-maker. One of the issues that leaves the decision maker in a difficult position is selecting the most appropriate one from the alternatives available, as traditional methods may not produce a realistic solution in this process. However, multicriteria decision making methods facilitate the process of finding a solution and enable decision makers to reach the right decisions. In this study, the fuzzy TOPSIS method, which is one of the multi-criteria decision making methods, is used in this problem area to select the most appropriate supplier of garment 'X' operating in Turkey. It is detected through analyses conducted in line with the results obtained. The ranking of the three supplier firms determined by firm X are as follows in terms of closeness index values: supplier 1, supplier 3 and supplier 2.

Content available remote Risk evaluation of tunneling projects
EN
Tunneling industry has seen great advancements in underground construction projects. Now, it has significant difference with the last two decades. In many times, tunneling projects find themselves involved in the situation where unexpected conditions threaten the continuation of project. Managers always look for a reliable technique to overcome limitations of finance and time. TOPSIS method is widely used to solve multi criteria decision making (MADM) problems. This technique assigns the best alternative among a pool of feasible alternatives. Furthermore, due to inherent uncertainties in tunneling, using fuzzy logic in order to take into account these uncertainties can be useful. In addition, new factors are introduced to promote the accuracy of risk analysis. Finally, a real world case study is presented to show the effectiveness and the accuracy of the new risk evaluation model. The results demonstrated that collapse is the riskiest parameter in Ghomroud water conveyance tunneling project.
