The paper deals with the free vibration analysis of irregularly shaped plates using differential quadrature method (DQM). In the paper some effective approaches to deal with the problem of mapping irregular area into regular one are presented. These approaches are used in conjunction with a branch of the DQM based on spline interpolation to solve the free vibration problem of thin, isotropic plates. The use of this type of interpolation in the DQM ensures the stability of the method. As the results, the convergent tests of the natural frequencies are presented and compared with the results from conventional DQM.

W okresie ostatniego półwiecza, pałace polskie pełniły rozmaite nowe funkcje. Służyły przede wszystkim jako gmachy publiczne: szkoły, uczelnie i urzędy, domy pracy twórczej (Białystok, Jabłonna, Natolin, Siedlce, Warszawa). Jedynie część z nich po II wojnie światowej przekształcono w muzea, wykorzystując wyłącznie dla funkcji turystycznej (Łańcut, Wilanów). Jest też liczna grupa obiektów pałacowych o funkcji mieszanej, w których funkcja turystyczna (muzeum, galeria) występuje równocześnie z inną (np. uczelnią, siedzibą administracji rządowej, domem pracy twórczej). Przykładem są pałace w Nieborowie (dom pracy twórczej i muzeum), Puławach (instytut badawczo-rozwojowy i muzeum), Radziejowicach (ośrodek konferencyjny i muzeum), pałac Czapskich w Warszawie (uczelnia, galeria i muzeum). Tak jak i w innych częściach Polski, coraz częściej w pałacach poza funkcją muzealną oferowane są speeyficzne usługi komercyjne: kameralny hotel i pokoje gościnne w stylowych wnętrzach, towarzyszące im lokale gastronomiczne (Nieborów. Radziejowice, Teresie, Pęcice). Wydaje się, że zainteresowanie turystów taką bazą hotelarską jest ogromne i podaż nie nadąża za popytem. Ponieważ coraz większym powodzeniem wśród turystów, cieszą się hotele zorganizowane w historycznych rezydencjach te tendencje skłaniają do rozważenia kompromisu między funkcją komercyjną (hotelarską) a naukowo-dydaktyczną (muzeum, galeria) historycznych rezydencji.

In the span of the last five decades, Polish palaces have played a variety of new functions. In principle they served as public buildings: schools, universities and offices, art work facilities (Białystok, Jabłonna, Natolin, Siedlce, Warszawa). After the World War II only some of them have been turned into museums and used exceptionally for tourism purposes (Lańcut, Wilanów). There are also numerous palaces of a mixed use, in which the tourism function (a museum or a galery) is combined with another one e.g. a university, a seat of a governmental administration, an art work facility. Examples of such palaces include Nieborów (an art work facility and a museum), Puławy (a research and development unit and a museum), Radziejowice (a conference center and a museum), the Czapskis' Palace in Warsaw (a university, a gallery and a museum). Similarly as in other regions of Poland, beside museum functions, the palaces offer specific commercial services: a small hotel and guest rooms in an old style spaces accompanied by a restaurant (Nieborów, Radziejowice, Teresie, Pęcice). It seems that the tourists are extremely interested in such hotels and the demand for such services is hard to be satisfied by the available offer. Since hotels established in historical residences find an increased interest from tourists, such a tendency leads to consider a compromise between the commercial function (a hotel) and an educational and scientific function (a museum, a gallery) of the historical residences. A potential function of palaces as local culture centers with cultural events organized e.g.: concerts, literature promotion events etc., addressed to local communities should be also underlined. It seems that a creative vision of a facility's management combined with a good cooperation with governmental institutions, local authorities and NGOs may contribute to both: a value added to the quality of free time spending (recreation) of local communities and an increased interest of the tourists. Examples include the palaces of Nieborów, Radziejowice, Jabłonna, Warka where cultural events are organized not only for the guests but for the local communities as well. Special attention should be paid to the use of the landscape park in Falenty: the most valuable area with respect to nature qualities has been under legal protection (the Raszyńskie Pond Reserve Area) ), a path has been created with information boards and signs that serves educational purposes.
