Place miejskie to przestrzeń publiczna o szczególnym znaczeniu w tkance miast, to wnętrza urbanistyczne ogniskujące życie miast i pełniące funkcję „miejskich salonów”. Przełom wieków XX oraz XXI to dynamiczny okres przeobrażeń funkcjonalno-przestrzennych placów miejskich w Polsce w kierunku atrakcyjnej wizualnie przestrzeni publicznej o wysokiej estetyce rozwiązań i zróżnicowanym profilu funkcjonalnym. W artykule, opartym na metodologii studium przypadku, analizie poddano plac Mikołaja Kopernika w Opolu o szczególnej historii, położeniu oraz znaczeniu w zurbanizowanej przestrzeni miasta. Celem badań jest przedstawienie zrealizowanej w latach 2017–2019 kompleksowej transformacji funkcjonalno-przestrzennej placu z odniesieniem do jego historii, chronologii wcześniejszych przeobrażeń oraz wiążących uwarunkowań. Plac Kopernika jako znaczące wnętrze urbanistyczne Opola nie został do tej pory objęty monograficznym opracowaniem, niniejszy artykuł jest próbą wypełnienia tej luki badawczej.

City squares are public spaces of special importance in the fabric of cities, urban interiors focusing city life and acting as "city salons". The turn of the 20th century is a dynamic period of functional and spatial transformations of city squares in Poland towards a visually attractive public space with high aesthetics of solutions and a diversified functional profile. The article, based on the case study methodology, analyzes the Nicolaus Copernicus Square in Opole with its special history, location and importance in the urbanized space of the city. The aim of the research is to present the comprehensive functional and spatial transformation of the square carried out in 2017-2019 with reference to its history, chronology of previous transformations and binding conditions. Copernicus Square as a significant urban interior of Opole has not been covered by the monographic study so far, this article is an attempt to fill this research gap.

The article analyzes the transformational processes in the zones of military garrisons and presents the present functions of these territories as parts of modern cities. The main changes of planning structures of buildings and stylistics of facades are outlined. There is presented the project of architectural rehabilitation of the garrison complex and its integration into the modern urban environment.
