The paper focuses on the downtown built environment (downtown waterfronts) and also on individual architectural objects which have an important function in such a space. The quality of the built environment affects its surroundings not only in a physical but also in a social way. To find the most appropriate ways of preventing the occurrence of the built environment pathologies in downtown areas, the study used the diagnostic technique of functional performance understood, among other things, as the ability to satisfy the stakeholders’ needs and the impact of stakeholders’ actions on their living environment. During the research, a comparative platform was found for the functional performance, the imperative of sustainable development and the ecosystem services of rivers and reservoirs. The investigations resulted in the creation of success indicators illustrated by examples of six voivodeship capital cities in Poland which have the strongest connection with the downtown built environment in waterfront areas, namely: Gdańsk, Szczecin, Warszawa (Warsaw), Kraków (Cracow), Wrocław and Poznań.

Na przykładzie wybranych wyrobów budowlanych do hydroizolacji i odwodnienia obiektów mostowych (papa zgrzewalna i poliamidowy sączek mostowy) przedstawiono zasady oceny technicznej: przydatności wyrobu budowlanego do zamierzonego stosowania w przypadku aprobat technicznych; właściwości użytkowych zasadniczych charakterystyk w przypadku krajowych ocen technicznych.

On the example of selected construction products used for drainage of bridge structures (waterproofing membrane and bridge deck drain, filter drain), the technical evaluation was presented in comparative form: suitability for intended use of the construction product, in case of technical approvals; performance of essential characteristics, in case of national technical assessments.

Humans are a part of nature and society. They tend to satisfy their needs that guarantee the existence by using natural and social richness. Forests represent a reservoir of the natural richness. They perform economic, ecological and social functions. The paper presents characterization of the social functions of forests, with particular focus on health function, recreation and tourism function, educational function and cultural function. With specific categories of forests, the scope of organizational and managerial activities conducted by forest authorities was presented as determining factors in performance of these functions. Furthermore, the focus was on the negative factors that affect forest environment and its functions.

This literature survey highlights the possible influences of surface roughness parameters on functional properties of surfaces produced by different finishing operations. The prediction of such functional properties as fatigue, sealing capacity, adhesion, friction, wear and corrosion resistance based on five groups of spatial (S) roughness parameters is overviewed. In contrast, traditional approach based on 2D roughness parameters is provided. Some real 3D surface topographies produced with desired functional properties by finishing cutting and abrasive operations are characterized. This survey confirms the vital role of machined surfaces in the functionality of machine components.

W artykule rozpatrywane są zmiany właściwości użytkowych budynku, jakie powstają od momentu oddania do użycia do czasu tzw. wyjścia z użytkowania. Wyodrębniono dwa, niezależne procesy jakie występują w trakcie eksploatacji budynków: pierwszy - stałe pogarszanie się właściwości użytkowych obiektu oraz drugi - wzrost wymagań użytkowników. Poddano szczegółowej analizie te zjawiska: przedstawione są zarówno główne przyczyny ich powstawania jak i przebieg tych zjawisk zapisany jako funkcja czasu. Praca zawiera stosowne przykłady.

This article considers changes in the utility properties of a building which occur over the period from when it comes into use and when it is taken out of use. Two independent processes occurring during building use are identified: firstly a continuous deterioration in the building's utility qualities, and secondly an increase in users' expectations. Detailed analysis of these phenomena is presented, including their main causes and their progress as a function of time. The article also contains relevant examples.

W Przeglądzie Budowlanym nr 4/2011 został opublikowany artykuł dr inż. arch. Jerzego Cybisa i dr inż. arch. Wiesława Olejko pt. "Modernizacja zasobów mieszkaniowych w technologii wielkopłytowej. Możliwości realizacji w polskich realiach społeczno-ekonomicznych". W artykule została przedstawiona w sposób trafny, chociaż skrótowy, ogólna ocena obecnego stanu, mankamentów i wartości użytkowej spółdzielczych osiedli mieszkaniowych z zabudową wielorodzinną sprzed 1990 roku wzniesionych z zastosowaniem tej technologii.

Przegląd Budowlany no. 4/2011 contained an article by Dr Jerzy Cybis and Dr Wiesław Olejko titled "Modernization of housing stock built of prefabricated concrete slabs - feasibility in Polish socioeconomic conditions". The article gives a brief but accurate general assessment of the current state, deficiencies and utility value of the estates of housing blocks built using that technology by co-operatives before 1990.

W niniejszym artykule autor starał się postawić pytania otwierające dyskusję na temat trwania i przemijania blokowisk. Mimo upływu ponad dwudziestu lat od chwili upadku komunizmu wywierają one znaczący wpływ na krajobraz polskich miast i świadomość społeczną. Nierzadko pod względem krajobrazowym i urbanistycznym, położenia względem obszarów śródmiejskich oraz obsługi bytowej przedstawiają wysokie walory.

Despite the passage of over twenty years since the communism falls, they affect significantly the landscape of Polish cities and social consciousness. Often in respect to landscape and urban aspect, position in respect to downtown areas or household services they present high value.
